Men's Volleyball Defeats No. 9 Loyola Chicago in Four Set Battle

Fairfax, VA - The Princeton men's volleyball team earned an exciting 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon defeating the top ranked No. 9 Loyola Ramblers 3-1 (28-30, 25-16, 25-23, 31-29).
The Tigers showed their grit and determination all throughout Saturday's match to earn a dominant victory in Fairfax.
Ben Harrington led the match in kills (18) and Harrington also led the Tigers in aces (5).
Nyherowo Omene totaled four blocks for the match, Henry Wedbush led the Tigers in assists with 38, and Nate Thompson totaled ten digs for the match.
Saturday was a total team effort from the Tigers who put their depth as a team on full display.
Set One
The Tigers played an evenly matched first set with the Ramblers. Ryan Vena executed a service ace to tie things up at 10-10, and the match continued in a back and forth scoring fashion. The Tigers took a four-point scoring streak featuring a Ben Harrington kill and another Vena ace, but Loyola responded with a scoring streak of their own to tie things up again at 22-22. Alexander Mrkalj nabbed a kill and an ace to put Princeton ahead 26-25 and then another Harrington kill tied set one 27-27. Loyola found its' rhythm to take a scoring streak and win the opening set 30-28.
Set Two
Down by one, Princeton continued to fight on with the Ramblers. The highlight of set two was a seven-point Princeton scoring streak that soared Princeton ahead at 10-3. Nate Thompson and Owen Mellon put down a pair of kills shortly followed by three Ben Harrington service aces in a row to put the Tigers ahead at 13-3. The Ramblers fought back but the Tiger offense was able to finish out the second set on fire with more scoring from Harrington to earn the Tigers set two with a score of 25-16.
Set Three
With the match tied at 1-1, Princeton was ready to earn another set. Princeton took an early 11-8 lead in the third thanks to kills from Henry Wedbush and Nyherowo Omene. Loyola began to conduct more service errors that helped Princeton to stay in the lead. A four-point scoring streak that featured a pair of kills from Mellon, a Henry Wedbush ace, and an Omene kill put Princeton ahead at 16-10. The Ramblers made a comeback to even the score 22-22, but back-to-back Harrington kills and more Rambler errors clinched the set for the Tigers at 25-23.
Set Four
A determined Tiger team was ready to close out set four with a victory. Loyola took an early 11-7 lead, but Princeton stayed focus against the top ranked Ramblers. A Harrington service ace had Princeton trail by one at 11-12 and the teams battled back and forth until the Tigers evened the score all the way up to 24-24. Omene, Harrington, and Mellon all nabbed kills to keep the Tiger offense steady. A set that continued to tally back and forth to 29-29 a final Harrington kill followed by a Loyola error secured the set victory for Princeton 31-29 and won the Tigers the match 3-1 over the No. 9 Ramblers.
