Fencers Stand Second Headed into Trophy Sunday
March 25, 2023 | Women's Fencing
Entering the final day of competition Sunday at the NCAA Championships at Duke, the Princeton fencing teams are in strong position to add to their trophy collection.
Notre Dame (159) has a 13-win lead on the Tigers (146), who are 16 up on third-place Columbia (130), with all three schools having 48 bouts still to go on Sunday. If Princeton finishes second, it would be among the program's top four finishes in the era of the combined men's-women's NCAA Championships, since 1990. Princeton finished second in 2012 and 2014 around its 2013 championship. Princeton has finished in trophy position, in the top four, 11 times in that span, including a run of seven straight such finishes from 2011-17. Last year's fourth-place finish was the program's first team-trophy finish since 2017.
The Irish entered the day with a 17-win lead over Princeton after the men's competition, and all six women's fencers for both schools are in top-12 All-American position entering the final day as Notre Dame aims to hold off the Tiger run.
Princeton sabers Chloe Fox-Gitomer and Ryan Jenkins stand first and ninth, while defending NCAA foil champ Maia Weintraub is first and teammate May Tieu is fourth, and épées Jessica Lin and Hadley Husisian are third and fifth. The top four finishers in each weapon once the round-robin is complete will compete in 15-touch semifinal bouts, with the winners there competing in another 15-touch final for the NCAA weapon title. If Weintraub successfully defends her title, she would be the first two-time NCAA champion in program history, men's or women's, and would be the first woman in Princeton history to win two NCAA individual titles.
Competition in all three weapons will start at 9 a.m. Sunday with the individual championship bouts beginning at 1:30 p.m.
