
Men's Volleyball Defeats No. 14 Charleston in Weekend Sweep over the Golden Eagles

Charleston, W. VA - The Princeton men's volleyball team had an exciting weekend of victories, defeating Charleston for the second consecutive match to earn a thrilling 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 27-25, 26-24) victory over the No. 14 Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers showed their grit until the final set to earn an impressive confrence victory in West Virginia.
Ben Harrington led the match in kills (17) and Harrington also led the Tigers in aces (3).
Ryan Vena recorded a season high of six blocks to lead the Tigers on Saturday and Henry Wedbush led the Tigers in assists (46) and digs (8) for the match.
Set One
The Tigers brought the offensive energy from Friday's victory into the opening set of Saturday's match. Similar to Princeton's first match with the Golden Eagles, The Tigers played a competitive first set with Charleston. Nyherowo Omene knocked down a kill to tie things up at 10-10, and the set continued as a point for point contest. James Hartley, Ben Harrington, and Ryan Vena tallied more kills to tie the set again at 18-18. Another Harrington kill followed by a Charleston error closed out set one in favor of the Tigers 25-22.
Set Two
Ahead by one, Princeton continued to fight on with the Golden Eagles. Another back and forth set was tied 9-9 following a Nyherowo Omene kill. The Charleston offense kept up with the Tigers, responding to Princeton after each point scored. With more kills coming from Vena, Hartley, Harrington, and Omene, the set continued in a point for point fashion up to 18-18. In an evenly played set, back to back points scored by the Golden Eagles allowed Charleston to stay ahead 24-21, and then ultimately win set two 25-22 after a kill from Charleston's Garret Schnitker. With the match tied up at 1-1 the Tigers were fired up and ready to win another two sets and take back the lead.
Set Three
With the match tied at 1-1, Princeton was ready to earn another set victory. Princeton took an early 11-8 lead thanks to a three point scoring streak featuring kills from Ryan Vena and Nyherowo Omene. Although Charleston managed to close the gap to trail 14-16, a string of errors from the Golden Eagles extended Princeton's lead to 20-18. Brady Wedbush contributed a Tiger kill to put Princeton ahead 21-20, and a kill from Ben Harrington tied the score 23-23. Following yet another big time kill from Harrington to tie the match at 25-25, Brady Wedbush and Nyherowo scored consecutive kills to clinch set three in favor of Princeton 27-25 and lead the match 2-1.
Set Four
An energized Tiger team was ready to close out set four with another conference victory. Charleston took an early 15-9 lead, following a seven point scoring streak, but the Tigers did not let the Golden Eagles' lead impact the teams' intensity. Kills from Ben Harrington and an ace from Owen Mellon allowed Princeton to close the gap to trail Charleston 15-18. Princeton kept its scoring coming from all over the court, with Henry Wedbush, Ryan Vena, and Brady Wedbush all tallying kills to decrease Charleston's lead to two at 19-21. Charleston and Princeton continued to score point for point with the Tigers trailing the Eagles at 21-24, until Princeton took a four point scoring run featuring a Harrington kill combined with more Charleston errors to give the Tigers the lead 25-24. A final kill from setter Henry Wedbush secured the set victory for Princeton 26-24 and won the Tigers the match 3-1 over the No. 14 Golden Eagles to take their second victory over the ranked conference opponent.
