It'll Be Old Guys Currier And Schreiber Against Young Gun Sowers In PLL All-Star Game
July 19, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
Wait, Tom Schreiber and Zach Currier are old guys? Officially?
It depends on your definition of old. As far as the Premier Lacrosse League goes? Yes, they're old.
Schreiber and Currier may be much closer to their Princeton playing days than they are to, say, Social Security, but for this year's PLL All-Star Game, that doesn't matter. This year's format is Rising Stars vs. Veterans.
To be a Rising Star, you have to be 25 or under. Schreiber, who is 30, and Currier, who is 27, no longer qualify.
The PLL All-Star Game will be held Sunday night at 7:30 in Louisville, and the game can be seen on ESPN and ESPN+. There will be three Princeton alums among the games starters.
Schreiber and Currier, the only two players ever to be the PLL Midfielder of the Year Award winner, will start for the Senior Citizens, er, Veterans. Michael Sowers will start for the Rising Stars.
It's been a great first half of the PLL season for everyone with Princeton men's lacrosse affiliations. Princeton's three all-stars are on teams who are tied for first place at 4-1, with Schreiber and Ryan Ambler on the Archers, who are coached by former Tiger head coach Chris Bates, and Currier and Sowers on the Waterdogs, with whom they won the league championship a year ago.
One game back, at 3-2, are the Cannons, who feature offensive coordinator Jim Mitchell (who has the same position with the Cannons) and assistant coach Chris Aslanian (who plays attack/midfield).
Schreiber is tied for third in the league in assists with 10, one more than Sowers. Schreiber also have seven goals, giving him 17 points, 10th in the league. Sowers is 16th with 15 points on 6 goals and nine assists.
Currier has four goals and four assists, as well as five caused turnovers and 17 ground balls. Does any other player in the league match those numbers? No, they don't. In fact, no other player with 17 or more ground balls has more than three points, and the same applies to any other player who has at least five caused turnovers. Currier's skillset remains unequalled.
Ambler continues to be a solid pro contributor, with three goals and two assists as a midfielder. Aslanian is one of only five players in the league with multiple two-point goals, as well as five one-point goals and two assists.
Mitchell has the Cannons' offense on top of the league in goals, assists and shooting percentage.
