
Women's Volleyball Drops Hard-Fought Contests to Coastal Carolina & UMBC

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team played a pair of competitive matches Friday at the Maryland Tournament, first falling 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 25-20, 25-16) to Coastal Carolina inside the Xfinity Center before dropping a 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 25-18) contest to UMBC inside Chesapeake Insurance Arena.
Freshman Kamryn Chaney had an outstanding day for the Tigers, leading the team with a combined 28 kills and also recording 10 digs. Sophomore Lucia Scalamandre also ended the day with 21 kills, eight blocks and five digs. Freshman Sydney Draper led the Tigers in assists with 79, including 47 against the Chanticleers and also recorded 15 digs. Defensively, Sydney Bold was everywhere and tallied a team-best 31 digs.
Princeton vs. Coastal Carolina
While the Tigers opened the first set with a 3-0 run, the set became as a back-and-forth battle and a kill by Chaney tied it up at 13-13. A 3-0 Chanticleer run put Coastal Carolina up 16-13 and it did not look back from there. It used another 3-0 run to make it a 23-18 contest, but the Tigers showed resilience with kills by Scalamandre and Chaney bringing it to 23-20. Coastal Carolina ultimately held on, winning the set 25-21.
Led by a Chaney kill, Princeton also opened the second set with a 3-0 run. Another 3-0 Princeton run, also ignited by a Chaney kill, gave the Tigers a 9-5 lead before a 4-0 Coastal Carolina run made it an 11-10 contest. With the scored tied at 14-14, a Scalamandre kill followed by a Chanticleer attacking error put Princeton up, 16-14, and the Tigers would remain in control from there. Another 3-0 run, this time sparked by a kill by junior Mariah Haislip, gave the Tigers a 23-18 lead and Princeton would hold on to prevail in the set, 25-22.
The Chanticleers used an early 6-0 run to jump ahead 10-3 in the third set and would largely remain in control throughout. A 3-0 run gave Coastal Carolina a 19-10 advantage, but Princeton showed fight and a kill by freshman Ava Harrington ignited a 6-0 run that narrowed the deficit to four, 21-17. A Scalamandre kill followed by a Chanticleer service error made it 23-20, but Coastal Carolina would take the third set, 25-20.
A 5-0 run saw Coastal Carolina take control early in the fourth set, 6-1. While a 3-0 run that featured a pair of Chaney kills along with a Haislip kill made it 11-8, a 5-0 Coastal Carolina run gave it an 18-6 advantage. The Chanticleers held onto the momentum and went on to triumph in the set, 25-16, and the match, 3-1.

The Tigers opened the first set by taking a 5-2 lead after a service ace by Bold, before a 3-0 Princeton run put the Tigers in front 8-4. The Retrievers responded with a 6-0 run to surge ahead, 10-8, but the Tigers would battle back with a 3-0 run ignited by a Chaney kill, tying the score at 14-14. The set continued as a back-and-forth battle, but UMBC would edge the Tigers 25-23.
A Haislip kill followed by a Retriever attacking error saw the Tigers tie the Retrievers, 4-4, early in the second set, but a 6-0 run but UMBC put it ahead 13-7. Princeton showed its resilience, with a kill by Scalamandre sparking a 3-0 run and reducing the deficit to two, 14-12. With the Retrievers up 17-14, a kill by sophomore Valerie Nutakor ignited a 6-0 run that swung the momentum Princeton's way and gave the Tigers a 20-17 lead. On set point, Chaney rose and put down the kill to win for the Tigers, 25-21, and level the match, 1-1.
