Behind the Name
The annual Farnsworth Invitational, a fall event hosted by the men's tennis program, is named in honor of Ted Farnsworth '84, a former Tiger All-American, and among the best players in college tennis. He also won the Senior Player of the year for college tennis in 1984, which became the ITA Farnsworth Senior Player of the Year Award. Following graduation, Farnsworth played briefly on the pro tour before enrolling in officer training school to become a naval aviator - where he was part of the Top Gun program. Tragically, at age 31, Lieutenant Farnsworth was killed when his F/A-18 Hornet aircraft crashed while on a nighttime training mission in Nevada. Former Princeton Coach David Benjamin renamed the annual Princeton Invitational the "Farnsworth Invitational" starting in 1994 to honor Ted and his wonderful contributions to Princeton and his country.
