October 05, 2024 | Men's Soccer
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With goals from Daniel Ittycheria and Will Francis, the Princeton men's soccer team defeated Brown 2-1 on the road in Providence on Saturday night. Princeton now improves to 5-3 on the season and 2-0 in Ivy League play, while Brown falls to 3-5-1 and 0-2 in conference play.
"Our guys grinded out a big win on the road tonight. We got off to strong starts in both halves, and we found a way to hold off a very good team at the end. We're proud of the effort tonight and will look to build on this as we head into next week." - Head Coach Jim Barlow
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tigers got on the board early as a challenge on Liam Beckwith in the fourth minute resulted in a Princeton penalty kick, which Ittycheria sent ricocheting off the post and into the net for the 1-0 lead.
Brown then began its search for an equalizer, pressing the Tigers and generating two corner kicks in the first 15 despite taking no shots.
Princeton had another close chance in the 20th minute as Kevin Kelley ran the ball in and passed to Ittycheria, who chipped the ball over to Ian Nunez, only for the resulting shot to be saved by the Bear keeper Henrik Weiper.
The end to end battle continued, with it nearly looking like Brown would tie it as a shot in the 32nd minute hit the crossbar, but neither side would be able to find another goal and the 1-0 score stood at halftime.
Coming out of the half, the Tigers struck again in just the 47th minute as Jack Jasinski sent a corner deep into the box where Francis tapped the ball into the net to double the Princeton lead.
Brown went on the counterattack quickly, forcing a save from keeper Khamari Hadaway.
The Tigers did not let up on offense though, with Francis and Ittycheria registering shots in the 54th and 57th minutes that were saved and deflected off the post, respectively.
In the 62nd minute, Brown got one back with Jamin Gogo Peters nailing a shot from outside the box past the hands of Hadaway.
The remainder of the 90 minutes saw an end-to-end battle as Princeton looked dangerous offensively, registering four more shots, while maintaining solid defending to keep Brown from finding an equalizer.
Still, neither side would be able to add another goal, and the 2-1 score stood final, marking Princeton's fifth win in the last six games.
