October 12, 2024 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. – In a close battle, the Princeton men's soccer team fell to no. 20 Cornell on Saturday afternoon at home in Roberts stadium. With the loss, Princeton falls to 5-4 on the season and 2-1 in Ivy play, while Cornell improves to 8-1-2 and 2-1 in the league.
"I am really proud of the effort from our team today. Cornell is a really good team, and we had some very good chances, and importantly, we were able to limit theirs. This was a game that we will be able to learn a lot from. Especially to be missing so many players who are out with injuries, we performed well today, and now our attention shifts to getting healthy and getting better with Army coming in on Tuesday." - Head Coach Jim Barlow
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both sides came out eager to get on the scoreboard first, with Cornell registering three corner kicks and Princeton registering two corners and two shots in the first 15 minutes of action.
In the 16th minute, it looked as if the Tigers would do it as Daniel Ittycheria headed a cross from Liam Beckwith towards the goal, but the Big Red keeper Ryan Friedberg deflected it above the net.
A shot by Cornell's Danny Lokko in the 24th minute was saved by the Tiger keeper Khamari Hadaway, who came off his line and picked up an injury in the process, causing the remainder of the match to be played with Andrew Samuels in goal for Princeton.
The Tigers continued pressing throughout the first half with a shot by Liam Beckwith in the 37th minute, which forced a save by Friedberg, and several dangerous crosses into the box. Still, the match remained scoreless at halftime.
Coming out of the half, Cornell looked dangerous with a shot on goal by Alex Harris in the 47th, which was saved by Samuels. The Big Red continued to pressure the Tigers, and although Princeton answered with several shots of its own, none found the back of the net.
The end to end battle continued until the 76th minute when the Big Red's Giorgos Diakos sent the ball past Samuels to put Cornell up 1-0.
In the 14 remaining minutes, the Tigers were not able to find an equalizer, and the 1-0 score stood final.
