Tigers Drop Home Match with Army, 1-0
October 15, 2024 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. – After conceding a penalty, the Princeton men's soccer team dropped its non-conference matchup with Army West Point 1-0 on Tuesday night in Roberts Stadium. With the loss, Princeton falls to 5-5 on the season and remains 2-1 in Ivy play, while Army improves to 4-8-1 overall.
"We are super frustrated that we weren't able to convert any of the many really good chances we created tonight, especially in the second half. But credit to Army; they were resilient and found a way to keep a clean sheet. The second half was one of our best yet in terms of creating chances, but when you don't finish them, you allow the possibility that one play can change things, and the inadvertent handball did that." - Head Coach Jim Barlow
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both sides came out with high energy early, with Daniel Ittycheria registering a shot on goal in the first minute of action forcing a save by the Army keeper Blair Camargo.
As the game settled into a quick, end-to-end battle, the Tiger defense was able to limit Army to just two shots, neither of which were on goal, and zero corners in the first half.
Another chance for Princeton came as Ian MacIver sent a cross into the ball where Ittycheria sent the header just wide of the goal in the 24th minute.
Again, in the 41st minute, Bardia Hormozi rocketed a curling ball towards the goal in what was the best chance the Tigers had yet, only for it to ricochet off the pipes.
Despite Princeton knocking with seven corner kicks and two shots on goal, the match remained scoreless at the half.
The second half was all-offense for the Tigers, as they dominated possession of the ball and registered 17 more shots, five of which were on target. Still, the Tigers could not find the back of the net.
In the 69th minute, an inadvertent Tiger handball resulted in a penalty kick which Army's Ronald Zhai converted.
The Zhai goal would prove to be the only one of the game, and despite Princeton's continued offensive efforts, the 1-0 score stood final.
