Duchovny's Game-Winner Propels Princeton Past Columbia, 2-1
October 19, 2024 | Men's Soccer
NEW YORK, N.Y. – With Gabe Duchovny scoring the game-winner from way outside the box, the Princeton men's soccer team defeated Columbia 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in New York City. With the win, Princeton improves to 6-5 on the season and 3-1 in Ivy play, while Columbia falls to 3-9-1 and 1-2-1, respectively.
"It is always hard to win an Ivy League road game, and even harder when you fall behind early. Columbia did well to score early and it took a strong second half from us and two great goals from Nico and Gabe to get us three important points." - Head Coach Jim Barlow
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lions struck first in the fifth minute with Alessandro Franciosa chipping the ball in off a corner kick to put Columbia up 1-0.
Princeton then began the search for an equalizer, putting together some momentum with three corners between the 15th and 16th minutes.
Still, the best chance of the game for the Tigers came in the 31st minute as a shot from Duchovny from outside the box was saved by the Columbia keeper Dean Kelliher, and despite Princeton's dangerous offensive look, the 1-0 score stood through to the half.
Coming out of halftime, the Tigers got to work right away as a header by Sam Vigilante found the back of the net but got called offside.
Not deterred, Princeton found the equalizer in the 49th minute as Nico Nee weaved through the Lion defense and sent the ball into the top right of the net.
The Tigers continued to put pressure on the Lions, generating two shots and a corner over the next fifteen minutes.
In the 64th minute, Duchovny got the ball about 20 yards outside the box and rocketed it above Kelliher and into the goal, putting the Tigers up 2-1.
The remainder of the match proved to be all-Princeton, as the Tigers generated nine more shots while Columbia registered just two in the second half.
Still, neither side would add another, and the Tigers took the win on the road, 2-1.
