Murphy & Smith Garner ECAC Weekly Honors
February 26, 2024 | Men's Ice Hockey
After helping Princeton to a pair of important ECAC and Ivy League wins, Arthur Smith and Ian Murphy have picked up weekly awards from the ECAC after the penultimate weekend of men's hockey's regular season.
Arthur Smith was named MAC Goaltending ECAC Goaltender of the Week, while Ian Murphy was selected as ECAC Forward of the Week presented by Bluebird Hotels.
For Smith, this weekly honor follows up his selection as MAC Goaltending ECAC Goaltender of the Month for December and a selection as ECAC Rookie of the Week back in November.
Smith backstopped the Tigers to a pair of wins in regulation this past weekend, giving up just one goal in each game as Princeton won at Yale (4-1) and Brown (5-1) for a road sweep. He stopped 51 of 53 shots faced for a .962 save percentage. He is now 2-0-1 in his last three starts with just four goals allowed -- only one of which came on 5-on-5 play. For the season, Smith ranks No. 7 among all ECAC netminders with a .904 save percentage.
Murphy was all over the scoresheet this weekend as he racked up six points on three goals and three assists. On Friday at Yale, he was in on all four Princeton goals with a hat trick and an assist. The hatty was the third of his career. He followed that up a night later with two assists at Brown. After missing five games with injury, Murphy has returned with seven points (4g, 3a) in his last four games. For the season, he has 21 points (9g, 12a) in 22 games played. His 0.95 points-per-game rank No. 8 in the ECAC and he is No. 11 in the conference with 0.41 goals-per-game.
Princeton enters the final weekend of the regular season in the No. 9 spot in the ECAC standings -- one point out of eighth and three away from seventh. Princeton hosts St. Lawrence (March 1) and Clarkson (March 2) this weekend and can still finish as high as sixth depending on results around the ECAC.
