February 25, 2024 | Women's Fencing
Away from campus and further away from campus, Princeton fencers took top honors as rookie Alexandra Lee won junior women's saber gold at the Junior Olympics and Maia Weintraub, taking the year off from Princeton, won team women's foil gold at the Cairo World Cup.
Lee's gold came on Feb. 17 in Charlotte, N.C., a weekend after earning All-Ivy League honors. Lee went 5-1 in the pool competition, earning the 25th seed in the bracket. Lee then won seven straight elimination bouts to take the title, first defeating a higher-seeded opponent in the round of 32 in a 15-11 win over Elaine Lu. The win in the finals came over 21st-seeded Irene Jung, 15-9. Full results can be found here.
Weintraub and teammates Lee Kiefer, Lauren Scruggs and Jackie Dubrovich were 45-13 winners over Egypt in the round of 16, 45-17 winners over Poland in the quarterfinals, 45-27 winners over France in the semis, and 45-33 winners over Italy to take gold.
Weintraub won the 2022 NCAA foil individual title as a rookie and followed that up with a third-place finish last year to win two All-American honors in as many years with the program.
