Princeton Caps H-Y-P Win With School Relay Record
February 03, 2024 | Women's Swimming and Diving
What's the best way to finish off decisive wins over your two biggest rivals? With a school record in the final event.
The Princeton 400 freestyle relay team of Sabrina Johnston, Ela Noble, Ellie Marquardt and Heidi Smithwick touched in 3:15.08, bettering the school record by 0.17 seconds and ending a two-day meet that saw the Tigers knock off Harvard 183-117 and Yale 195-105. Princeton is now off for nearly three weeks, until the Ivy League championship meet at Brown. The wins this weekend gave Princeton the Ivy dual meet championship, which is not the officially recognized Ivy winner.
The old record in the relay wasn't exactly that old. In fact, it was less than a year old, and Johnson and Noble were part of that relay as well, at last year's Ivy meet. Princeton's record-setting relay Saturday won by more than six seconds.
In addition to the relay, Noble (100 free), Marquardt (500 free) and Smithwick (100 butterfly) also won individual events on Day 2 of the meet. Other Princeton winners Saturday were Margaux McDonald in the 200 breaststroke and Eleanor Sun in the 200 IM.
McDonald and Dakota Tucker went 1-2 in the 200 breast, and Tucker was also second in the 200 IM behind Sun, while Eliza Brown was fourth in the event. Smithwick was followed by Johnson in third and Veronique Rossouw in fourth in the 100 fly.
Princeton honored its seven seniors Saturday: Marquardt, McDonald, Hannah Johnnson-Stjernstrom, Macey Mannion, Nathalie Valdman, Liza Whitmire and Jess Yeager.
