McMeekin, Kabiri Lead Princeton Past Harvard; Mackesy Scores 100th Goal
March 23, 2024 | Men's Lacrosse
Coulter Mackesy made some history. Andrew McMeekin and Nate Kabiri were more about current events.
McMeekin put up huge face-off numbers and Kabiri scored five goals and added an assist to lead Princeton to a huge 14-11 win over Harvard in cold and rainy Cambridge Saturday afternoon. Coulter Mackesy had a goal and three assists to become the 15th Princeton player to reach 100 career goals and the sixth to have at least 100 goals and 50 assists in his career.
The win came six days after Princeton dropped a heartbreaking game to Cornell on a goal with 1.6 seconds to go and seven days after Harvard had its own heartbreak in its league opener against Yale. Princeton trailed only once, at 4-3, and answered each time Harvard tied the game, which for the last time came at 9-9 on a goal with 12 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Tigers then outscored Harvard 5-2 in the fourth quarter, taking the lead on a rocket from a tough angle from by Sean Cameron and then a huge score from longstick midfielder Pace Billings and sealing it with three goals from Kabiri in less than four minutes. Kabiri's five goals gave him 22 for the season, tying him for ninth on the Princeton list for goals by a freshman.
As for McMeekin, he did everything, 90 percent of which was positive. Yes, he had four turnovers and a penalty, but he also won 20 of 29 face-offs, picked up 15 ground balls, scored a goal for the third straight game and rang one off the pipe on top of that.
Michael Bath had two more caused turnovers, giving him 12 in the last three games. Princeton got two goals each from Cameron and Quinn Krammer, while Colin Burns and Chad Palumbo had one each as well.
Princeton hosts Dartmouth this coming Saturday.
