Mackesy Lifts Princeton Past Lehigh 12-10
April 02, 2024 | Men's Lacrosse
An already miserable night at Sherrerd Field was on the verge of becoming even more so. Coulter Mackesy was having none of it.
Mackesy scored four goals, including the final two of the day 40 seconds apart in the fourth quarter, to lead No. 14 Princeton to a 12-10 comeback win over Lehigh on a cold, rainy and, well, miserable Tuesday night in Princeton. The Tigers, who are now 7-3 overall, are off for 11 days until playing at Brown to start a run of the final three games of the regular season, all of which are Ivy League games.
Princeton trailed 7-5 at the half and 8-5 when Lehigh added to its lead four minutes into the third quarter, but the Tigers went on a 7-2 run to end the game. The Tigers scored four straight to go up 9-8, getting goals from Colin Burns, Nate Kabiri, Mackesy and Chad Palumbo. Lehigh tied it at 9-9 and then 10-10 in the fourth quarter before Mackesy scored his final two, with 9:45 and 9:40 to go in the fourth. Neither team scored after that.
Palumbo had three goals, matching his career-best, while Kabiri had two. Face-off man Andrew McMeekin had another goal, giving him one in five straight games.
Michael Gianforcaro made seven of his 11 saves in the second half, when he allowed only three goals. Pace Billings caused four turnovers, while Colin Mulshine had three.
Mackesy now has 108 career goals, and he moved past Tom Schreiber into ninth place all-time at Princeton. Kabiri's three goals give him a team-best 27, which is one short of tying for second among Princeton freshmen.
