Softball Team Sweeps Yale, Stands Atop Ivy League
April 21, 2024 | Softball
Needing a sweep to take control of the Ivy League race heading into the final two weekends of the regular season, the Princeton softball team completed that task on Sunday afternoon in New Haven, turning in a 6-3 win over Yale to take all three games of the series.
Princeton has four Ivy losses with no other team having fewer than six. The Tigers will be at home for the final two weekends of Ivy play, hosting Brown next weekend and Cornell the following weekend.Â
The Tigers started early in their bid to complete the sweep on Sunday, using two walks, two errors and a hit batter to score two runs in the first. Allie Goodwin drew the bases-loaded hit-by-pitch before Julia Dumais scored on a dropped ball as Yale bid to force Dumais out at home plate.
Yale got a run back in the third before Princeton pushed the lead back to two at 3-1 in the fourth, with Sonia Zhang's two-out double picking up a leadoff hit by Cate Bade.Â
Princeton added two in the fifth when Karis Ford followed a Goodwin hit with a two-run homer to push the lead to 5-1, and after Yale scored once in the last of the fifth, Princeton got that run back when Dumais singled to pick up a one-out walk to Zhang to make it 6-2.Â
Yale threatened in the seventh with a walk and two hits, but the rally ended with just a run. Cassidy Shaw threw the first four innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks, striking out two, before Molly Chambers allowed just a hit in two innings of work, striking out one, and Brielle Wright handled the seventh, allowing a run on two hits and a walk, striking out one.
