Brooke Earns Silver Medal at Junior World Championships

Less than a month after making his NCAA championships debut, Princeton freshman Alec Brooke earned an épée silver medal at the Junior World Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on April 15, finishing runner-up in a field of more than 200 fencers.
Brooke went 5-1 in pool bouts, placing 25th after that portion of the competition. In the elimination bracket, Brooke won six straight bouts to reach fhe final, defeating Turkey's Doruk Erolcevik 15-7, Japan's Takayuki Yuminaga 15-9, fellow Brit Tristan Lumineau 15-14, Canadian Nicholas Zhang 15-10, Italy's Matteo Galassi 15-9, and Italy's Nicolo' Del Contrasto 15-9. The final was just a touch apart, with Switzerland's Alban Aebersold winning 15-14.
Results are available here. Brooke was a first-team All-Ivy League honoree in his rookie season, earning an NCAA bid and placing 14th.
Fellow Tiger rookie Tatiana Nazlymov placed 15th of 132 fencers in the junior women's saber competition, going 4-2 in pools to stand 37th before the elimination bracket and winning three times before her run came to an end in the round of 16 against Georgian Alexandra Kuvaeva 15-12. American Nazlymov defeated Saudi Arabia's Alhsna Alhammad 15-8, Azerbaijan's Zarifa Huseynova 15-4, and Bulgaria's Emma Neikova 15-14 on the way to the round of 16.
Nazlymov was a USFCA all-region first-team honoree after taking part in three events for Princeton during her rookie season. Nazlymov has qualified for the Olympic Games and will represent Team USA in both the individual and team women's saber competitions.
