Women's Lacrosse Pushes Past No. 7 Penn, 14-9
April 03, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse
No. 18 Princeton flooded the scoreboard en route to a 14-9 win over No. 7 Penn on a supremely soggy night at Class of 1952 Stadium and appropriately enough half of Princeton's goals were rained down from Haven as sophomore Haven Dora had a career night with seven points to lead the way.
Â
Dora had three goals and four assists, while McKenzie Blake scored five times and Grace Tauckus added three goals and an assist.
Â
The victory marks the highest-ranked opponent defeated by a Princeton team since they knocked off a Penn team which was also ranked No. 7 in May of 2017 during the Ivy League Tournament.
Â
Princeton (6-3, 2-1) also halted an 11-game winning streak for the Quakers (8-2, 2-1 Ivy) which entered as defending Ivy League champions and hadn't lost an Ivy game since a 15-13 loss to the Tigers at Sherrerd Field on April 20, 2022.
Â
It was Penn who came out on fire, scoring three of the first four goals for a 3-1 lead midway through the opening period.
Â
From there, Grace Tauckus scored with 7:05 to play in the first quarter before McKenzie Blake netted a goal just before the end of the opening quarter to tie it up, 3-3.
Â
The Quakers snuck back in front with two goals in 2:13 for a 5-3 lead early in the second quarter before Tauckus and Dora scored 0:57 apart to tie the game once again at 5-5.
Â
The run flipped back Penn's way for two more goals and a 7-5 lead with 5:21 to go in the half, but the Tigers had one more counter before the end of the half when Dora cashed in a Jami MacDonald pass with 2:43 left. The real whammy, though, was a Kari Buonanno goal right before the buzzer which tied the game at 7-7 and permanently turned the tide.
Â
MacDonald followed 2:26 later – off a feed from Dora of course – for Princeton's first two-goal lead and the Quakers never got closer than one the rest of the way.
Â
The Quakers only scored once in each of the final two quarters, getting within one in the third period and back within two with 11:38 remaining in the fourth.
Â
That was the final marker for the Quakers on the night as Amelia Hughes clamped down the rest of the way and allowed goals from McKenzie Blake (two) and MacDonald over the final 9:30 of play to provide well-earned insurance.
Princeton is back in Ivy play on April 6, taking on Columbia in NYC.

Amelia Hughes was stellar in goal, making 11 saves while conceding just nine goals – including only two goals allowed in the second half. Why Not Slip and Slide?

Naturally, it was Dora who gave the Tigers their first lead of the game 1:13 into the third period when she took a long-distance Jami MacDonald feed and fired home on the run before sliding through the wet turf for an 8-7 lead.Buzzer Beaten!
