Husisian Makes Olympic Debut in Women's Individual Épée

Hadley Husisian got a win in her Olympic debut Saturday in Paris, opening with a women's individual épée round-of-32 win for Team USA over Switzerland's Pauline Brunner 12-11 before a 15-12 loss to Hong Kong's Vivian Kong Man Wai, the eventual gold medalist, in the round of 16.
Husisian's match against Brunner was three touches apart at its widest margin, with Brunner leading 5-2 early in the second period. By the end of the second, Husisian rallied to tie it at 6-6 before taking her first lead at 9-8 in the third. Brunner tied it at 9-9 before a double touch made it 10-10. Husisian then took an 11-10 lead only to see Brunner tie it at 11-11 before the end of the third. Husisian then had the first touch of overtime, moving her on to the round of 16.
Less than three hours later, Husisian met Kong, who never trailed in the bout. Kong led 3-1 after a period and 8-3 after the second in what was her largest lead before Husisian cut the deficit to as little as two at 10-8 during the third period. Kong held off Husisian, advancing to the quarterfinals.
Husisian competed as a freshman during the 2022-23 school year, finishing third at the 2023 NCAA championships, before taking 2023-24 off for Olympic prep.
Husisian, together with fellow Tiger Katharine Homes '17, will be part of the four-member U.S. women's épée team to compete on Tuesday. The Americans will open against Poland in the quarterfinals at 7:30 a.m. ET.
Saber Tatiana Nazlymov (USA) and foil Mohamed Hamza (Egypt) wll be the next Tigers to fence, with Nazlymov opening the women's individual competition at 5:15 a.m. ET on Monday against South Korea's Sebin Choy in the round of 32 and Hamza opening the men's foil individual competition at 6:05 a.m. ET on Monday against an opponent to be determined earlier Monday.
