Hamza Makes Quarters Again as Nazlymov Debuts at Olympics

Three-time Olympian Mohamed Hamza '23 made the individual men's foil quarterfinals for the second straight Games and rising sophomore and U.S. fencer Tatiana Nazlymov made her Olympic debut in the individual women's saber event on Monday as competition continued for Princeton's fencers.
Representing Egypt, Hamza won twice to make the quarters. Against Poland's Jan Jurkiewicz, Hamza led 6-2 in the first period before Jurkiewicz came back to lead 9-7 and 10-8 by the end of the period. Hamza scored four straight touches to lead 12-10 in the second period and then 14-11 before Jurkiewicz tied it at 14-14. Hamza then had the winning touch to move on to the round of 16. Against Spain's Carlos Llavador, Hamza trailed only at 5-4, responding with three straight touches and leading the rest of the way in a 14-12 win. Italy's Filippo Macchi, the eventual silver medalist, won 15-9 in the quarterfinals, ending Hamza's run.
South Korea's Sebin Choi, the eventual fourth-place finisher, was a 15-14 winner over Nazlymov in the round of 32. Choi led 11-7 in the second period before Nazlymov roared back to lead 14-12. Choi had the last four touches to hold off Nazlymov and advance.
The women's épée team competition is up next for the Princeton contingent, with Katharine Holmes '17 and rising sophomore Hadley Husisian competing for Team USA beginning with the quarterfinals against Poland at 7:30 a.m. ET.
Hamza and Nazlymov will compete in their respective team events. The women's saber event is set for Aug. 3 with 7 a.m. ET quarterfinals against South Korea for the Americans, and the men's foil event is set for Aug. 4 with 5:50 a.m. ET quarterfinals for the Egyptians against Team USA.
