Princeton rising sophomore forward Pietra Tordin will be headed to Colombia later this month with Team USA as the Americans compete in the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.Â
Tordin, who has taken part in several training camps and trips with Team USA this year, was named to the squad announced on Thursday by U.S. Soccer.
"(Associate head coach) Mike (Poller), (assistant coach) Chris (Duggan), and I are ecstatic that Pietra has earned this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Princeton head coach Sean Driscoll said. "Last fall, she mentioned to me that her dream has always been to represent the USA. To see that dream come to fruition is absolutely amazing and a testament to both her talent and her drive. Our team eagerly looks forward to watching Pietra put her uniquely special qualities on display on the world's stage. We are incredibly proud of her and can't wait to root her on from afar."
Â
The 24-team event will begin on Aug. 31, split between the capital Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali. The U.S. is in a group with Spain, Morocco and Paraguay, facing those teams respectively on Sept. 1, Sept. 4 and Sept. 7. The top two teams in the group will advance to the 16-team knockout round, as will four of the six third-place teams. The knockout round will begin on Sept. 11 with the final set for Sept. 22.Â
The event began in 2002 as the U-19 Women's World Cup before becoming a U-20 event in 2006. The events held every two years, with the 2020 event lost to the pandemic, and Team USA will be looking to advance to the knockout round for the first time since 2016, when it finished fourth. The U.S. and Germany are tied for the most championships, at three, with the Americans last winning in 2012.Â
Two years into her Princeton career, Tordin has already loaded up on superlatives and is climbing the program's record lists. Tordin earned United Soccer Coaches third-team All-American honors, becoming the first sophomore-or-younger Tiger to do that since Diana Matheson '08 in 2004. The 2022 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Tordin added a first-team All-Ivy League honor this past season to her second-team all-league recognition from her first season. At 20 goals scored, Tordin already stands 14th on Princeton's career scoring list and is just the fifth player in program history to have at least 20 goals by the end of her sophomore season.Â
