Princeton 1V, 2V Race Into Henley Final
July 06, 2024 | Heavyweight Rowing
There will be definitely be Princetonians who celebrate the championship of the Ladies' Plate Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta Sunday afternoon. The question is will it be two of them or nine of them?
The Tiger first varsity had another wire-to-wire victory, this time powering through Saturday's English rain and past the Thames Rowing Club and Tidewater Sculling School by more than a length in its semifinal matchup. The win vaults Princeton into Sunday's Ladies' Plate championship race, where the opponent will be a Cambridge University boat that features two Princeton alums — rower Seb Benzecry '20 and coxswain Jake Intrater '23.
"The varsity rowed a strong piece in some challenging conditions out there this morning," Princeton head coach Greg Hughes said. "The semis are always fierce battles, and it's great to earn the chance to race against tomorrow in the final. The fact that Cambridge has two of our recent grads makes our connection to tomorrow's race that much more special."
There will be two Princeton boats who race Sunday in the finals. The 2V, racing in the late afternoon sunshine in the Temple Challenge Cup, won for the fourth time in five days, defeating the Oxford Brookes B boat by two full lengths, advancing to Sunday's final against Oxford Brookes A boat, who rowed away from Harvard in the other semifinal.
The start times for Sunday's finals will be announced later Saturday.
""What an amazing day for the entire Princeton family," Associate Head Coach Matt Smith said. "To have two boats in the final of two separate events is special. The support of the Princeton University Rowing Association and all our friends and family have made this happen."
Princeton's heavyweights will now row in a Henley final for the first time since winning the Ladies' Plate in 2006. Princeton boats have won nine Henley championships, first by the lightweights in 1948 and most recently a year ago by the lightweight women.
