PISCATAWAY – The Princeton men's soccer team will open up the 2024 season with a trip up Route 1 to face old New Jersey rival Rutgers on Friday, August 30. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Yurcak Field in Piscataway.Â
The Tigers will face the Scarlet Knights as they begin a challenging schedule that features two preseason United Soccer Coaches Top 25 NCAA DI teams, including No. 9 New Hampshire and No. 16 Georgetown. The Ivy League will also hold the second annual men's soccer conference tournament, with the top four teams competing for the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.Â

About the 2023 Season
- The Tigers finished the 2023 season 4-8-3, going 1-4-2 in Ivy league play.Â
- Junior forward Daniel Ittycheria finished the season with nine goals and one assist last year, ranking second in the Ivy League in goals scored, points (19), and shots on goal (1.53/G). His performance also earned him First Team All-Ivy honors.
- Senior forward Nico Nee also led the Tigers with three goals and six assists for 11 points on the season. He was sixth in the league for assists and 10th for points.Â
- Junior forward Will Francis notched four goals and one assist last season for 9 points, rounding out the Tigers' three top scorers from 2023.Â
- Junior midfielder Jack Jasinski was named Second Team All-Ivy last year after being a dependable force in the Tiger lineup.
- In goal, senior captain Khamari Hadaway will be returning after leading the Ivy League in saves in 2023, averaging 4.50 per game.Â
- In addition to Hadaway, fellow seniors Issa Mudashiru and Harry Roberts were elected as co-captains to lead the 2024 Tiger side. Â
About the New Tigers
- Joining the Tigers this year is the nationally no. 13-ranked recruiting class by TopDrawerSoccer, including Cyrus Klinenberg (No. 77), Kristian Kelley (No. 82), Roka Tsunehara (No. 113), Dash Papez (No. 116), and Nathan Salerno.
- Freshman forward Tsunehara was named to the TopDrawerSoccer preseason All-Freshman team on August 20. The Burlingame, Calif., native was the 2022 MLS Next U16 National MVP. He was also a leading scorer for the San Jose Earthquakes U17 team as they reached the semifinals of the MLS Next cup in 2023.Â
- Along with Tsunehara, Klinenberg joins the Tigers as the No. 74-ranked recruit in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer, also with the distinction of being a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-American in 2022 and 2023.Â
- A pair of new Tigers hail from the D.C. United academy system, with Papez and Zhang bringing impressive experience at the academy level with them to Princeton. Papez, who captained the D.C. United academy for five years, was recognized as a top defender in the Class of 2024 by PrepSoccer.
- Together, Papez and Zhang led their team to win the U16 MLS Next Cup Playoffs while making deep runs in both his U15 and U17 years. Both have also played with USL Championship team Loudoun United.
- Versatile midfielder Kelley will be joining his brother Kevin on the team, bringing experience with the Real Monarchs MLS Next Pro team and stints with Paris Saint-Germain and RCD Espanyol.Â
- Freshman goalkeeper Salerno comes to Princeton after playing with the Columbus Crew II and helping secure key victories in the MLS Next Pro playoffs.
About Coach Barlow
- Head coach Jim Barlow is entering his 28th season as the men's soccer head coach and has accumulated 210 career wins with the Tigers, the most for any soccer coach in Princeton history, men's or women's. Barlow, the 2021 Ivy League Coach of the Year, will look to build upon the winning experiences of his returners and incorporate the talent brought in with this year's new Tigers as they begin the 2024 campaign.
About Rutgers
- The Scarlet Knights are currently 1-1-0 on the season after taking their season opener against Northeastern 3-1 and dropping their next game to Delaware, 4-1.Â
- In 2023, Rutgers went 5-8-3 overall and 3-4-1 in Big Ten play.Â
- The last meeting between Rutgers and Princeton was at Roberts Stadium last season, where the Tigers took the 2-1 win in their season opener. Nico Nee and Ittycheria each scored a goal, with Nee also assisting Ittycheria.Â
- Friday will be the 26th meeting between the two sides since 1990, with Rutgers holding the advantage 13-8-4 against Princeton. The Tigers are 2-5-3 on the road in Piscataway.Â
