Pietra Tordin and Team USA walked off the field in Bogotá as winners on Saturday night as the Americans defeated the Netherlands 2-1 in extra time to win bronze at the 2024 FIFA Women's World Cup in Colombia.
Princeton was one of just eight schools with at least two players at the tournament, which began on Aug. 31 with 24 teams. The U.S. was in Group C and bounced back from an opening 1-0 loss to Spain with a 2-0 win over Morocco and a 7-0 win over Paraguay. Tordin, a forward and a junior at Princeton, started each of those last two games, getting a hat trick against Paraguay as the Americans finished second in the group.
Zoe Markesini, a sophomore backliner with the Tigers, started all four of Canada's games, scoring a goal in the group-opening 3-3 tie against France. Canada went on to finish third in Group B after a 9-0 win over Fiji and a 2-0 loss to Brazil, getting one of the four third-place team spots to move on to the knockout round. Spain defeated Canada 2-1 in the round of 16 as Markesini and the Canadians headed back north, with Markesini making her season debut for the Tigers on Sept. 15 at home against Georgetown.
It was Markesini's second FIFA tournament, competing with Canada at the 2022 U-17 tournament held in India as Canada went 0-1-2 to finish third in its group, coming up short of a spot in the knockout round two years ago. The trip to the knockout round was Canada's first at the U-20 tournament since 2014, when it hosted the event and when the knockout stage began with the quarterfinals.Â
The U.S. continued on in the knockout round with a 3-2 win over Mexico in the round of 16 in which Tordin started and scored the first goal. Tordin started again in a 2-2 tie against Germany in the quarterfinals that saw the Americans advance on penalty kicks, and Tordin entered off the bench in the U.S.'s 1-0 semifinal loss to North Korea that sent the Americans to the third-place game. Tordin returned to the starting lineup against the Netherlands.
The bronze capped the U.S.'s best finish since it won the tournament in 2012.Â
