UPDATED: Tigers Split Season-Opening Day in North Carolina
February 14, 2025 | Softball
A 9-0, five-inning win over Drexel and a 2-0 loss to host North Carolina gave the Princeton softball team a first-day split on its opening weekend in Chapel Hill.
The Tigers will return for two more on Saturday and the series finale on Sunday. Saturday's schedule will put Princeton against George Mason at 9 a.m. (new time) before a rematch with the Tar Heels at 1:30 p.m.
Princeton 9, Drexel 0 (5 inn.)
Four Tigers hit home runs, Julia Dumais drove in four runs, and Cassidy Shaw and Meghan Harrington combined for the shutout as Princeton opened the season with a 9-0 win over Drexel.
Lauren Sablone picked up a Sonia Zhang walk for a two-run home run in the first before Allie Goodwin singled home a Karis Ford triple to make it 3-0 after half an inning.Â
Allison Ha hit a solo homer in the second inning to make it 4-0, and Ford hit a solo homer in the third to make it 5-0. Dumais picked up a Ha single with a two-run shot to make it 7-0 in the fourth, and Princeton moved the game into run-rule territory with a Dumais double that brought home Julieta Roa, running after Abby Hornberger was hit by a pitch, and a Graciela Dominguez base hit to make it 9-0.
Shaw went three innings to get the win in the shortened game, going three innings and allowing three hits with two walks and three strikeouts before Harrington allowed just a walk in two innings to close it out.Â
North Carolina 2, Princeton 0
Princeton's 2-0 loss to North Carolina saw just five total hits and three combined walks, but UNC's three hits were all productive as the Tar Heels picked up the win.
Shelby Barbee was the first Tar Heel to reach after Princeton starter Brielle Wright retired the first five batters, sending a solo homer to left field to get UNC on the board. The lead became 2-0 in the fifth after a quiet third and fourth that saw just a walk allowed for Wright and rookie Keala Hollenkamp, who made her collegiate debut with a strikeout to get the final out of the fourth. A double, a walk and two ground balls pushed across what became the game's final run.
UNC starter Kenna Raye Dark limited Princeton to two hits and a walk, fanning 11 to complete the shutout. Sablone drew a two-out walk in the first before Ford and Goodwin had back-to-back two-out singles in the fourth as Princeton tried to mount a rally before a pop-up ended it. Dark retired the last 10 Tiger batters to finish the win.Â
