Five in a Row! Ivy Title Streak Rolls On as Tigers Belt Seven Homers in Twinbill Sweep
April 25, 2026 | Softball
After 14 wins the Princeton softball team's first 15 Ivy League games, two wins over Harvard were all that stood between the Tigers and ensuring that their Ivy League championship streak would continue into a fifth straight year and that the Ivy League Tournament would again be in Princeton, its only home since it began in 2023.
Scoring 20 runs and belting seven homers, the Tigers dealt Harvard a doubleheader sweep on Saturday on the banks of the Charles, locking up the outright Ivy title and bringing the Ivy League Tournament back to Cynthia Lynn Paul '94 Field in two weeks.
The 8-0, five-inning and 12-3, six-inning wins marked the first time in series history that Princeton took both games of a doubleheader from Harvard in run-rules. The wins put Princeton at 16-1 on the Ivy League season with four games to play, within striking distance of the league record for Ivy wins in a season co-held at 18 by Princeton (2008), Harvard (2011) and Dartmouth (2014).Â
Weekend weather around the Ivy League footprint scattered the league schedule from Friday through Monday, but through Saturday's play, Princeton (16-1) holds a six-game lead over both Harvard (10-7) and Columbia (10-7). Penn, at 8-9, stands a half-game up on Brown (6-8) in fourth for the final Ivy League Tournament spot, with Cornell (7-11), Yale (7-13) and Dartmouth (4-12) rounding out the table. Princeton will wrap its series at Harvard with a 12:30 p.m. game on Sunday before hosting Dartmouth next weekend to close the regular season. The Ivy League Tournament will begin at Cynthia Paul Field on May 7.
The first game saw Princeton score each of its first four runs on solo home runs across the first four innings, with Graciela Dominguez sending one out as the second batter of the game, Julia Dumais homering in the third, and Abby Hornberger and Jessica Phelps going back-to-back to lead off the fourth. The rest of the four Tiger runs on the way to the run rule came in the fifth inning, with Karis Ford doubling home a Dominguez hit, Hornberger singling home Dumais, Phelps bringing home Ford with a base hit, and a Roa ground ball bringing home Hornberger.Â
In the circle, Cassidy Shaw and Brielle Wright split the shutout, with Shaw allowing just two hits and two walks, striking out three in four innings, and Wright allowing a hit and a walk in throwing the fifth.
Game two saw Princeton open the scoring with three runs on four hits in the second inning as Roa had an RBI hit and Maddie Ratcheson had a two-RBI single. Ford led off the third with a homer to get Princeton to 4-0, and though Harvard got two runs back in the third, Princeton scored the next eight runs to put the game out of reach. Dominguez reached on an error to pick up a Ratcheson triple in the fourth, and the last seven Tiger runs came in the fifth as Princeton sent 13 batters to the plate to get four singles, two homers, a double and two hit batters. Sonia Zhang belted a two-run homer to get Princeton to 7-2, and Hornberger had her second homer of the day to drive in three runs and get the lead to 10-2. Ratcheson's RBI single added the 11th run, and a Zhang double, in her second at-bat of the inning, made it 12-2.
Harvard got one run in the bottom of the sixth but couldn't extend the game as Reece Uehara went five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits without a walk, striking out one, and Wright closing it out with just a walk in a scoreless inning.
Hornberger finished the day with five RBI including the two dingers and as one of four Tigers with four hits on the doubleheader along with Dominguez, Phelps and Ratcheson.
