PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton men's volleyball team will hit the road again for a weekend two-game series with EIVA rival Charleston on Friday, February 21st and Saturday, February 22nd.
About the Tigers
- Princeton is coming off a big win over no. 19 NJIT on Friday, taking the match 3-1 (25-15, 21-25, 26-24, 25-20) to snap the Highlanders' six game win streak and open EIVA play. With the win, the Tigers improved to 4-4 overall.
- Nyherowo Omene and Mason Rice each tallied a game-high 15 kills on the night, with Omene adding four aces. They had .345 and .333 hitting, respectively.
- Senior Omene earned his second career EIVA Offensive Player of the Week honors on February 3rd. Omene notched 13 kills, recorded a .813 hitting percentage and added an impressive six service aces against FDU. Omene actively leads the EIVA in total career aces with 110 which ties him for sixth in the nation.
- Omene has also become a career leader in kills, currently ranking 12th nationally in division I with 794 total.
- Omene sits in the top 50 in multiple statistical categories across D1 volleyball. Omene is currently sixth in the nation in aces per set. He is also 14th in points per set and 29th in kills per set. He is also 21st in hitting percentage with .365.
- Henry Wedbush has racked up 217 assists this season, putting him at fifth in the EIVA and 33rd nationally in assists per set with 8.68.
- Rice has had a strong start to his collegiate career and is eighth in the EIVA in hitting percentage and second on the Tigers' roster with 98.5 points, good for an average of 3.52 per set which also puts him at eighth in the league.
- Roan Alviar leads Princeton in digs, averaging 1.93 per set with 54. He now ranks second in the EIVA.
- The Tigers were picked to finish fourth in the EIVA preseason standings. Princeton was also tied for 17th in the latest AVCA poll.
- Omene and Wedbush were named to the 2025 EIVA Players to Watch list. Both seniors were named to the All-EIVA First Team at the conclusion of last season.
- Joining the Tiger squad this year are five newcomers in the class of 2025, including Alviar, Ambrose Engling, Rice, Kevin Yang and Ethan Wells.
- First-years Alviar and Engling were named to the 2025 VolleyballMag Boys Fab 50 list.
- Princeton ended the 2024 season with a trip to the EIVA quarterfinals and an AVCA ranking of 18 in the final coaches' poll. The Tigers went 12-12 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
- Tristan Whitfield was named the 2024 EIVA Freshman of the Year. Now entering his sophomore season, Whitfield led the EIVA in blocks last year with 80.0 while also recording 23 digs, 65 kills (1.08 per set), and six service aces.
- The Tigers are led by Sam Shweisky, who has coached the Tigers to 2 EIVA Championships and 6 EIVA Finals. Shweisky is in his 16th year as head coach of the Princeton men's volleyball program, and he is assisted by Joe Norton in his second year.
About Charleston
- The Golden Eagles are 5-6 on the season and 2-0 in EIVA play after sweeping Sacred Heart, 3-0 and 3-1, on February 8th and 9th.
- Xander Bomert leads the EIVA in kills per set, averaging 4.06. Kai Cousins is third with 3.44 per set.
- Paul Stommel is second in the EIVA in assists per set with 9.87.
- Defensively, Cousins is also fifth in the EIVA, averaging 1.75 digs per set.
- Princeton is 13-4 all-time against Charleston, with the last meeting a 3-0 Golden Eagle win in the EIVA tournament last year. Last season, the two sides split the regular season series.
