Softball Team Gets Comeback Win in First-Ever Home Night Game
April 02, 2025 | Softball
After the rains came, the Tigers awoke in the first-ever home night game for the Princeton softball team on Wednesday against Lehigh.
Scoring all seven of their runs across the fifth and sixth innings, the Tigers rallied for a 7-6 win over Lehigh at Cynthia Lynn Paul '94 Field, winning their seventh straight game before heading back into Ivy League play beginning Friday at Dartmouth.
Lehigh built a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs each in the third and fourth innings. The Mountain Hawks reached runners on an error, a base hit, and an unsuccessful fielder's choice before a sacrifice fly to score the two third-inning runs before three walks and two hits added up to two more runs and a 4-0 lead in the third.
Princeton had a runner on in each of the first three innings and two on in the fourth, but Lehigh turned the Tigers aside each time. In the top of the fifth, Lehigh had two on and two out when a 34-minute rain delay began, and once play resumed, Princeton got out of the inning and got the offense going in the bottom of the fifth.
Two walks and a base hit loaded the bases, and though a force out at home put the Tigers one out away from leaving the inning empty-handed, Jessica Phelps slid through a two-run single to cut the Tiger deficit to 4-2.Â
Lehigh got both runs back in the top of the sixth on a hit batter, two hits and a sacrifice fly, but Princeton got right back to it with a huge last of the sixth. Two batters after an Allie Goodwin leadoff double, Braeden Hale crushed a two-run homer to centerfield to pull Princeton within 6-4, and Sonia Zhang followed that with a solo shot to get the Tigers within a run at 6-5. A walk to Julia Dumais and an unsuccessful fielder's choice that put Karis Ford put two on for Allison Ha, who had a base hit to tie the game, and then a Phelps ground ball picked up Ford to put Princeton in front.
Cassidy Shaw, who entered during the top of the sixth, got the win in relief of starter Meghan Harrington and first reliever Keala Hollenkamp, allowing just a hit and a walk over two innings in the circle.
