April 03, 2025 | Wrestling
PRINCETON, N.J. – Mikey Squires and Ty Whalen were named NWCA All-American Scholars, the organization announced Wednesday.
The distinction is given to wrestlers who excelled on the mat and in the classroom, meeting exceptional standards both academically and within the sport.
This marks the first time each Tiger has received the award.
"I'm very proud of Mikey and Ty for getting recognized for their hard work in the classroom. Their academic goals did not falter all year while training towards their ultimate goal of being an NCAA Champion." - Head Coach Joe Dubuque
Senior captain Squires posted a 12-7 record on the season, claiming the Princeton Open 184 lb title in November. The computer science major also earned notable wins including one over Shane Cartagena-Walsh in Princeton's dual against Rutgers, and he was ranked as high as 27th nationally this season. After walking on to the team his freshman year, Squires has proven himself a formidable opponent on the mat and leader both in the wrestling room and the classroom.
Sophomore captain Whalen was a 2025 NCAA qualifier, going 20-5 on the season. Whalen took third place at the inaugural Ivy League Tournament, and he picked up ranked wins on the season over #9 Jaden Abas and #18 Ethan Fernandez. Whalen himself was ranked as high as sixth nationally this year. Whalen was a critical piece of the Tiger lineup this season as the Mullica Hill, N.J. native excelled both on the mat and academically this year.
