Pair of Goals Earns Markesini Ivy Defensive Weekly Honors
August 25, 2025 | Women's Soccer
Two days after scoring her first career goal at Princeton, junior backliner Zoe Markesini added her second, and coupled with 180 minutes captaining the Tiger defense, Markesini has earned the nod from the Ivy League's coaches as the Ivy Defensive Player of the Week.
Markesini's first goal came against Rutgers to open the scoring and put Princeton on the board in the 75th minute. Markesini set down a corner kick from teammate Drew Coomans, received the loose ball in return from Brooke Dawahare, and fired it inside the left post, threading a shot from near the penalty spot past a diving keeper and a Rutgers defender minding the post to put the Tigers up 1-0 in an eventual 1-1 tie.
Two days after that Friday goal, Markesini scored at Loyola on Sunday night, again putting Princeton on the board, this time with a rocket from around 30 yards out off a failed Loyola clearing attempt to tie the game at 1-1 in an eventual 2-1 defeat.
A 2024 second-team All-Ivy Leaguer, Markesini played for Canada in the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, scoring a goal while starting all four of Canada's games in the competition.
The two goals at Loyola were the only ones Princeton allowed in the run of play on the weekend as the Tigers outshot Rutgers and Loyola a combined 45-11 overall and 18-7 on goal.
Markesini and the Tigers will host Ohio State on Thursday night at Roberts Stadium before continuing the homestand against Syracuse on Sunday morning.Â
