Quick Facts:
• Tennis was one of the original women’s varsity sports introduced at Princeton during the 1971-72 academic year. The others were basketball, crew, field hockey,Â
squash and swimming.
• Princeton dominated Eastern women’s tennis from 1971 to 1982. The Tigers won their first 39 dual matches from 1971 to 1975 and captured 10 consecutive MiddleÂ
States Tournament titles (1971-80), five consecutive Seven Sisters Tournament titles (1974-77 and 1979) and four consecutive Eastern titles (1979-82). PrincetonÂ
advanced to the national tournament five straight years (1979-83). At the 1982 AIAW nationals in Iowa City, Iowa, 11th-seeded Princeton upset No. 6 Mississippi andÂ
No. 5 Southern Methodist to finish in eighth place.
• The team has won 18 Ivy titles since the league began awarding formal championships in 1979. A tournament determined the league champ from 1979-81 beforeÂ
round-robin play came into existence.
• Princeton women’s tennis has been nationally ranked on several occasions. The team's highest season-ending ranking was 11th in 2020.
• Former coach Louise Gengler ’75 won the C. Otto von Kienbusch Sportswoman of the Year Award following her senior year. Her two sisters, Marjory and Nancy,Â
were tennis standouts at Old Nassau as well. Louise was a three-sport athlete (tennis, field hockey, ice hockey).
• Princeton has played in the NCAA team tournament on 12 occasions, including 1983, 2000, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024 with the Tigers being included in 64-team draws inÂ
the tournament from 2000 forward. Princeton broke through and won its first NCAA tournament match in 2014, defeating Arizona State 4-3, and won again in 2019, defeating Northwestern 4-1. The Tigers also defeated Army in the Round of 64, 4-0, in 2022 and the Tigers also advanced to the second round in 2023 after taking down Fordham, 4-0. 2024 also saw the Tigers advance to the Round of 32 after taking down Washington, 4-3, in the round of 64. Princeton players have also been included in the NCAA singles and doubles tournaments. In 2014, Alanna Wolff made it 12 tournaments in which a Princeton player was in the singles draw, and in 2012, Lindsay Graff and Hilary Bartlett made Princeton's third appearance in the doubles tournament. Daria Frayman and Victoria Hu played in the 2022 NCAA Singles Tournament. Frayman returned to the singles tournament in 2023, and also played in doubles with Grace Joyce.
