What made you choose a career in healthcare?
A gut feeling after visiting an orthopedist for knee issues as a middle schooler. Then the more I learned about the career, the more it seemed the perfect fit – academically challenging, physically demanding, and helping people!
What aspects of having been a pre-med student-athlete and being a doctor help you most as an Olympic athlete?
At Princeton, my classmates and teammates set a high bar – helping me to push myself – and made working hard more fun thanks to a collaborative environment.
What have you most admired in your colleagues or learned about yourself in the time of COVID?
I love the challenge of chasing speed and the straightforward nature in rowing that effort (usually) leads to improvement. I also love the physical sensation of being on the water – the flow and also the mental task of embracing the pain.Gevvie Stone
COVID was a tough time for my former co-residents as they were finishing their final year and beginning as attendings. They used the challenge to forge an even stronger bond among the group and to help one another out – whether with a clinical issue, a life question, or a joke.
What inspires you to persist as an Olympic athlete?
I love the challenge of chasing speed and the straightforward nature in rowing that effort (usually) leads to improvement. I also love the physical sensation of being on the water – the flow and also the mental task of embracing the pain.
How do you imagine you'll be changed or have grown when you return to your practice?
Being unable to help as a physician during the pandemic made my desire to return to medicine stronger. I will return to residency with renewed enthusiasm to learn, to work hard, and to be the best doctor I can be.
