Gerken showed signs of maturing into a consistent tournament threat when he opened his sophomore season by playing more than four strokes per round better than he did as a freshman. His 71.63 stroke average led the Tigers that fall. Gerken led Princeton with a 72.73 scoring average this fall. Gerken placed second at the Temple Invitational and posted Top-10 finishes in all four tournaments in his sophomore fall. He was the Tigers' top finisher in five of their six spring tournaments. He also posted the low round of the fall, a career-best 67, while finishing fifth at the James Madison Invitational. He was the low Tiger individual in three of Princeton's five fall tournaments.

Gerken, who advanced to match play at the U.S. Amateur Championship the summer before coming to Old Nassau, broke onto the collegiate scene quickly as a freshman with a fourth-place finish at The McLaughlin. His first-round 68 on the Bethpage Red course proved to be the low score for the year of any Tiger. He then improved upon that fourth-place finish with back-to-back runner-up finishes in his next two fall tournaments. Gerken rounded out his freshman fall season with his fourth straight Top-10 finish, at the Hoya Invitational. Gerken's solid play is vital to the Tigers this spring.
