PRINCETON, N.J. —?Derek Theisen ran for 147 yards and one touchdown and Taylor Northrop kicked field goals of 47, 44 and 42 yards to lead Princeton to a 22-10 win over Lafayette in front of 14,805 at Princeton Stadium.
The victory improved Princeton to 2-3 at the midway point of the season. The Tigers have five Ivy League games remaining, beginning with next week's game at Harvard.
Princeton improved its lead in the series against Lafayette to 32-2-3.
Northrop, who was 1 for 3 on field goal attempts prior to the game, connected from 47 and 44 yards as Princeton built a 6-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Ryan Demler then intercepted a pass immediately following the kickoff after the second field goal, and Tommy Crenshaw hooked up with Phil Wendler for a 16-yard touchdown pass on the next play to make it 13-0.
Crenshaw completed 21 of 35 passes for 218 yards in what was easily his best performance to date. The touchdown pass was the first for the sophomore QB. "There have been times when I would go out there and forget what I was supposed to do," Crenshaw said. "I'd just try to throw the ball to someone and make a big play. In this game, I felt much better, much more relaxed. I had a much better idea of what I was trying to do."
It was 13-3 at intermission after a Lafayette field goal with 29 seconds to go in the second quarter, but Northrop capped Princeton's first drive of the third quarter with a 42-yard field goal. Theisen built the lead to 22-3 when his two-yard run ended a 12-play, 58-yard drive with 7:31 to play. The Leopards then scored a late touchdown for the final count.
"It felt good to get this win," Theisen said. "The three teams we've lost to [Cornell, Lehigh, Brown] were a combined 12-1 going into this week. Those are some pretty good teams. Now we're looking forward to getting into the heart of the Ivy schedule and seeing if we can get some wins."
NOTES — Wendler caught seven passes and has caught at least six in every game … Danny Brian had career highs with six receptions and 102 yards. He became the only Princeton wide receiver other than Wendler since 1993 to have a 100-yard receiving day. Brian's 44-yard reception set up one of the field goals … Crenshaw completed 21 passes after completing 23 in the first four weeks combined … Demler's interception was his third of the year … Chris Roser-Jones had his second interception of the season … Michael Higgins had six solo tackles … Nathan Podsakoff had seven tackles and 1.5 sacks.
