PRINCETON, N.J - The Princeton men's water polo team improved its record to 11-1 with four victories this weekend in the North-South Invitational at DeNunzio Pool in Princeton. The Tigers, ranked 13th in the last CWPA poll, began the weekend with a 12-3 thumping of Harvard on Friday, following by a 16-11 win over Iona and a 6-4 victory over No. 11 St. Francis on Saturday. Sunday saw Princeton get sweet revenge against Queens, who is responsible for the Tigers' only loss this season. The Orange and Black held off a late rally for the 9-6 win.
In the opening game of the tournament, the host Tigers drew Ivy foe Harvard. Princeton jumped out to a 6-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. The Crimson scored with six seconds remaining for the 12-3 final. Juniors Chris Gratian (Modesto, Calif.) and Forrest Christo (Davis, Calif.) led the Tigers with three goals each.
The Tigers began Saturday right when they left off the night before, defeating Iona 16-11. Princeton scored four goals in the fourth quarter, two by Kevin Foster (Fr., Davis, Calif.), for the five-goal win. Goalkeeper Greg Stoll (Sr., Lake Forrest, Calif.) played the entire game, recording eight saves. That win set up a showdown with the top ranked team in the East, St. Francis. With half the total goals scored in the first quarter, the second half saw an impressive defensive effort by the Tigers, including keeper Jon Pharris (So., Newport Beach, Calif.). Princeton did not allow St. Francis to score in the final two quarters, and Pharris recorded 16 saves to come away with the 6-4 victory. The Tigers were led by freshman Robert Urquhart (Ann Arbor, Mich.) with three goals. The final game gave Princeton the chance to avenge its only loss on the season—an 11-10 decision at the Princeton Invitational three weekends ago. The first quarter saw very little offense, with a goal by Foster at the 5:18 mark the only score. Queens sandwiched a pair of goals around another Foster score for a 4-4 tie at halftime. Both teams tallied their share of goals in the third quarter, with the Tigers holding a 7-6 advantage. Princeton held Queens scoreless in the final period, and Foster scored two of his game-high seven goals for the Tigers 9-6 win.
Princeton is now 11-1, 5-0 CWPA on the year and will return to action on Oct. 9 as it continues league play at Washington and Jefferson.
