Tigers Sink Navy 7-6 to win Southern Championship
October 31, 1999 | Men's Water Polo
The first quarter proved to be a defensive effort as both teams managed to put only one goal on the board. Goalkeeper Jon Pharris (So., Newport Beach, Calif.) stopped a 4-meter shot by Navy midway through the quarter to keep the score knotted at one each. The Tigers tallied four goals in the second frame to take a 5-3 lead into halftime. Two goals by Kevin Foster (Fr., Davis, Calif.) in the third quarter gave Princeton a 7-3 lead heading into the final seven minutes of play.
Luckily for the Tigers the seven goals proved to be enough despite allowing three goals in the fourth quarter that brought the Midshipmen within one with under four minutes remaining. Marshall Roslyn (So., Philadelphia, Pa.) made a save with less than a minute to play, and the Tigers used the entire 35-second clock, giving Navy the ball with just under 15 seconds to go. Navy's Andrew Sause fired a shot with three seconds remaining, but Pharris came up with the save, his 16th of the game.
Foster led the Tigers with three goals, while junior Chris Gratian (Modesto, Calif.) added two.
Princeton is now 20-2 on the year and will return to action on Saturday, November 13, in the opening round of the CWPA Eastern Division Championship hosted by Navy in Annapolis. Game is set for noon.
