Men's Soccer Team Punishes Adelphi

PRINCETON, N.J. - With a big game against Yale looming on the horizon on Saturday afternoon, the Princeton men's soccer team put to rest any thoughts of looking past Adelphi. The Tigers got two goals from senior Brein Wassner (Roslyn, N.Y.) in a game where 22 different Princeton players saw action. Princeton is now 11-4-1 and Adelphi falls to 8-8.
Mike Nugent (So., West Windsor, N.J.) got the offensive onslaught rolling for the Tigers with a goal from just outside the box in the 27th minute. The shot deflected off the goalie's hands and into the net. Wassner scored his first of the game less than three minutes later after taking a pass from Nugent.
Wassner's second goal of the game, and the eventual game-winner, came early in the second half and after Griff Behncke (Sr., Williamsburg, Va.) scored to make it 4-0, the rout was on. Five players who had not seen action prior to tonight's game entered the game for the Tigers.
After a Panther goal by Zach Baldwin in the 67th minute, Dan Osei (Jr., Suffern, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the season from Benjy Diggs (So., Seattle, Wash.) for the final Princeton tally.
Eric Blomberg scored for Adelphi for the final 5-2 score. Princeton fired a total of 22 shots, forcing Panther goalkeeper Igor Yatsenko to make 11 saves. Princeton held a 13-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Saturday's game against the Bulldogs is for the Ivy League's automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. A Princeton win, and the Tigers win the league outright for the first time since 1960 and score the automatic bid. Should the Tigers falter, the Elis get the automatic bid, but the Tigers are still co-champions.
