NORRISTOWN, Pa. - Four members of the men's water polo team received All-CWPA League honors for their performance during the 1999 season. Junior Chris Gratian (Modesto, Calif.) was selected first-team for the second consecutive year, while freshman Kevin Foster (Davis, Calif.) was not only a first-team selection in just his first season as a Tiger, but was chosen the Southern Division Most Valuable Player. Sophomore goalkeeper Jon Pharris (Newport Beach, Calif.) was selected first-team goalie. Freshman Robert Urquhart (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was named to the second team.
Foster, whose brother was an All-CWPA selection at the U.S. Naval Academy, led the team with 49 goals, including two two-point goals. In the North-South Invitational in Princeton, Foster registered back-to-back seven-goal games against Iona and Queens, earning ECAC Player of the Week accolades. He was named CWPA Player of the Week for scoring three goals, including the game-winner, against No. 12 Massachusetts. Foster tallied the game winner against Bucknell during CWPA league play and again in the Southern Division title game against Navy. Gratian, a two-time All-America, takes home league honors for the third consecutive year and selected first-team All-CWPA for the second straight season. He finishes the season with 41 goals, second highest on the team. Gratian tallied six goals in the overtime win against Bucknell during league play and added two more in the 7-6 Tiger victory in the Southern Division title game against Navy.
Pharris, a two-time CWPA Player of the Week, is making his first appearance to the All-CWPA squad. In three games at the Southern Division championship, Pharris tallied 24 saves, including the game-winner with less than 10 seconds to play against Navy in the final game. He has posted a 6.12 goals-against average with 112 saves heading into the Eastern Championship.
The other half of the dynamic freshman duo, Urquhart received second-team All-CWPA honors after a sensational rookie campaign. Urquhart was third on the team in scoring with 35 goals and led the Tigers with 11 two-point goals. Urquhart tallied four goals in the opening period against Johns Hopkins in the Southern Division semifinals, and he scored three of Princeton's six goals in the 6-4 victory over St. Francis. In his first game as a Tiger, Urquhart led Princeton with six goals against George Washington.
