PRINCETON, N.J. - On a day when fog and rain filled the skies, the atmosphere did not get any better in the Bob Carpenter Center as the Princeton women's basketball team fell to the University of Delaware 74-43 in Newark.
The Tigers jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the opening minutes, but a pair of three-pointers by Megan Dellegrotti sparked an 18-8 Blue Hen run to give Delaware a 21-14 lead midway through the opening period. The Blue Hens extended their lead to 30-18 with six minutes remaining on three consecutive field goals by Christine Koren.
Princeton snapped a four-minute scoring drought when Kate Thirolf (Sr., Rockville, Md.) hit a jumper at the 3:35 mark. Maureen Lane (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) knocked down a three-pointer with less than a minute remaining that sent the Tigers into the locker room trailing 34-23.
The Blue Hens opened the second half with a 9-4 run, with all four Princeton points coming at the free-throw line. Over the next four minutes, Princeton saw turnovers turn into Blue Hen points, as Delaware scored 11 unanswered to lead 49-27 with 13:16 to play. The rims seemed to tighten for the Tigers and swell for Delaware, as the Blue Hens hit four consecutive field goals from behind the arc and a built a 20-point lead midway through the second stanza.
For the Tigers, the saying "When it rains, it pours" seemed to ring truth as Delaware outscored Princeton 20-9 over the final nine minutes of the game for the 74-43 final score. The Orange and Black committed 30 turnovers and shot 11 of 25 from the charity stripe.
Maggie Langlas (Sr., Missoula, Mont.) was the only Tiger to score in double figures with 11 points, and Lauren Rigney (So., Marlborough, Mass.) set a career-high with 10 rebounds.
The Tigers fall to 0-3 on the season and will be back in action this weekend in the 12th Annual Princeton Invitational. The Orange and Black will take on Ohio on Friday, Nov. 26, at 4 p.m.
