PRINCETON, N.J. - Four Tigers scored in double figures as Princeton recorded its first win of the season with a 69-63 victory over Ohio University in the first game of the 1999 Friends of Princeton Basketball Invitational. The Orange and Black will face Arkansas, an 88-77 winner over UNC Wilmington, in the championship game tomorrow at 4 p.m.
The crowd of 335 at Jadwin Gym saw a closely played first half, with four ties and three lead changes. A three-point play by Brooke Lockwood (Sr., Palatine, Ill.) gave Princeton its largest lead at 27-22 with 3:30 to play in the opening period. Two free throws by Ohio's Heather Laughlin with seven seconds remaining sent the Bobcats into the locker room trailing by only one, 29-28 at halftime.
Jessica Munson (Jr., Norristown, Pa.) led the Tigers with nine points in the opening stanza. Freshman Allison Cahill (Uxbridge, Mass.) came off the bench to chip in five before intermission.
Neither team led by more than four through the midway point of the second half. Maggie Langlas (Sr., Missoula, Mont.) scored three of her game-high 16 points at the 3:50 mark to give Princeton a one-point advantage at 60-59. A driving lay-up by Kate Thirolf (Sr., Rockville, Md.) combined with six free throws in the final two minutes gave the Tigers a 69-61 lead with 11 seconds on the clock. A jumper by Bobcat Lori Moorman as time expired left Princeton with the 69-63 final score. Langlas led the Tigers with 16 points and added four assists without committing a turnover. Munson added 13, while Lockwood chipped in 12 points. Thirolf was the fourth Tiger that tallied double figures in points. She scored 10 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end. Freshman Maureen Lane (Seattle, Wash.) had her best overall game as a Tiger, scoring nine points and collecting two assists and two steals without turning the ball over. Princeton seemed to get back in rhythm at the line, knocking down 20 of 25 from the charity stripe.
The Bobcats also had four players score in double figures, led by Jacquie Negrelli, who came off the bench for 15 points and six rebounds. She also added a team-high five assists and three steals.
The Tigers improve to 1-3 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow, Nov. 27, in the championship game of the 12th Annual Friends of Princeton Basketball Invitational. The Orange and Black will take on Arkansas at 4 p.m.
