Princeton Tops Lafayette 73-58

PRINCETON, N.J. - Four Tigers scored in double figures as the Princeton women's basketball team defeated Lafayette 73-58 at Jadwin Gym tonight. The win was the second of the season for the Orange and Black and marked the second consecutive year that victory No. 2 came against Lafayette in the first game of December.
Despite trailing 3-0 in the opening minute, Princeton came out strong in the first half, especially senior co-captain Kate Thirolf (Rockville, Md.), who scored six of Princeton's first eight points. Two free throws by Brooke Lockwood (Sr., Palatine, Ill.) gave the Tigers a 14-9 lead, but a three-pointer by Lafayette's Katie Miller (Sr., Philadelphia, Pa.) drew the Leopards to within two at 14-12. The Orange and Black went on a 14-4 run for a 28-14 lead with eight minutes remaining. Lauren Rigney (So., Marlborough, Mass.) hit a layup with 2:13 on the clock to give Princeton its biggest lead of the first half at 42-22. A jumper by Laurie Infantino (So., Easton, Pa.) with a second remaining sent the Tigers into the locker room leading 42-28 at halftime. Lockwood led all scorers with 10 points at the break on 4 of 6 shooting from the floor, while Thirolf chipped in nine points and three assists.
The Tigers opened the second half with a 11-0 run to build a 53-28 lead over the first six minutes of play. A driving layup by Shani Moore (So., Pasadena, Md.) gave the Tigers their biggest lead of the game at 61-33 midway through the second stanza. With such a sizable advantage, head coach Liz Feeley was able to got to her bench, with three reserves playing over 20 minutes. Lafayette outscored Princeton 8-3 in the final four minutes for the 73-58 final score.
Moore led the Tigers with 11 points and eight rebounds. Rigney, Lockwood and Maggie Langlas (Sr., Missoula, Mont.) each added 10 points. Rigney set a career-high with six assists to go with one steal and one blocked shot.
Elizabeth Rojahn (Fr., York, Pa.) was the only Leopard to tally double digits, scoring 13 points.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 2-4 on the season, while Lafayette falls to 0-5. Princeton will be back in action this weekend at the Roger L. White Invitational hosted by Northwestern. The Tigers face the host Wildcats on Friday, Dec. 3, at 8 p.m.
