PRINCETON, N.J. - Siena's Sacha Baker (Jr., Pawtucket, R.I.) scored a career-high 25 points and handed out seven assists to lead the Saints to a 80-64 victory over Princeton in women's basketball action at Jadwin Gym on Saturday night.
The Saints marched to a 9-2 lead during the first three minutes of the game, and a jumper by Baker gave Siena a 28-18 lead at the 8:42 mark. Princeton cut the lead to four on a three-pointer by Maggie Langlas (Sr., Missoula, Mont.) with five minutes remaining in the half. An 8-3 Saints run to close out the opening stanza left Princeton trailing 38-29 at halftime.
Both teams shot better than 50% from the field in the first 20 minutes of play, and Siena recorded 15 assists on 16 made baskets, including five lay-ups and three hook shots. Maureen Lane (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) had nine points at the break, coming on three field goals from behind the arc. A three-pointer by Baker at the 15:41 mark of the second half capped off an 8-2 Siena run that gave the Saints a 49-34 lead. A long distance field goal by Jessica Munson (Jr., Norristown, Pa.) drew the Tigers within eight at 51-43 with 13:43 remaining, but that was as close as the Tigers would get. The Saints held their biggest lead at 67-48 with nine minutes on the clock. A free throw by Lauren Rigney (So., Marlborough, Mass.) brought Princeton to within 11 with less than two minutes remaining, but the Tigers scored only one point in the final 1:43 for the 16-point loss.
The Saints tallied a season-high 26 assists on 29 baskets and held Princeton to 34% shooting from the floor in the second half. Baker led all scorers with 25 points, followed by Bronwyn Tobin (Teaneck, N.J.) with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Rigney led Princeton with a career-high 14 points, topping her previous high of 11 against Cornell last season. Brooke Lockwood (Sr., Palatine, Ill.) added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
With the loss, the Tigers drop to 2-7 on the season, while Siena improves to 2-6. Princeton will be back in action next week at the Ala Moana Hotels Paradise Classic hosted by the University of Hawaii. The Tigers face Vanderbilt on Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 6 p.m.
