PENNSYLVANIA at PRINCETON
The 90th meeting
This Week's Note of the Week
- Yard work - Princeton has allowed a total of 156 rushing yards in four Ivy League games, Penn's Jim Finn is averaging 157 rushing yards in four Ivy League games.
- No rush - Princeton ranks first in Division I-AA in rushing defense
(54.1
yards per game).
- Seems like old times - For the third time in five years, Princeton and
Penn are tied for first as they play in Week 8. Penn won in 1994 and won
the title, and Princeton won in 1995 and won the title.
- History lesson - Princeton or Penn has won at least a share of the Ivy
League title in 11 of the last 16 years.
- D-plus - Princeton has three shutouts in a season for the first time
since
1965.
- Commonality - Princeton and Penn each defeated Columbia 20-0.
- Spreading it around - Princeton's four tailbacks (Damien Taylor, Derek
Theisen, Nathan McGlothlin, Kyle Brandt) have combined for 967 yards are
on pace for 1,381 yards for the year.
- Spreading it around II - All four Princeton tailbacks had at least
three
carries against Columbia.
- Spreading it around III - Each of Princeton's four tailbacks has been
the
team's leading rusher in a game at least once this year.
- Burnham, baby, Burnham - John Burnham is averaging 209 yards of total
offense per game, the most by any Princeton player since Jason Garrett in
1988.
- Burnham, baby, Burnham II - John Burnham has back-to-back 200-yard
passing
games. He is the first Princeton quarterback to accomplish this since Joel
Foote did so in three straight games (against Brown, Lehigh and Harvard)
in 1993.
- Burnham, baby, Burnham III - John Burnham has thrown six touchdowns
and
five interceptions. No Princeton quarterback has thrown more touchdowns
than interceptions while starting every game in a season since Chad
Roghair in 1991.
- Sack attack - David Ferrara has 11 sacks on the season. The school
single-season record is 14.5, set by Brian Kazan in 1991.
- Sack attack II - Princeton has 33 sacks in seven games after having 29
in
10 games last year.
- It's fan-tastic - Princeton drew 61,439 fans for six dates in the
final
season at Palmer Stadium (1996). Princeton drew 71,810 fans for its first
three dates in Princeton Stadium.
- It's fantastic II - Princeton averaged 10,240 fans per game in the
final
season at Palmer Stadium. Princeton has averaged 23,937 fans for the first
three games in Princeton Stadium.
- Yo Adrian - Rocky Fittizzi blocked a punt for a touchdown against
Columbia. It was his seventh blocked punt in the last 14 games.
- Getting his kicks - Alex Sierk is in second place all-time in field
goals
made among Ivy League kickers with 36. The record is 38, set last year by
Dartmouth's Dave Regula.
- Getting his kicks II - Alex Sierk has 36 field goals in 37 games in
his
career. Princeton kickers kicked 26 field goals in the 40 games in the
four years prior to his arrival.
- OK, smart guy - Alex Sierk has already won an $18,000 National
Football
Foundation and College Hall of Fame postgraduate scholarship. This week he
is being honored as a Burger King national scholar-athlete winner, with
$10,000 being donated to the Princeton general scholarship fund prior to
the Penn game. Sierk has a 3.97 grade-point average in molecular biology.
- OK, smart guy II - Leading tackler Jim Salters has the second-highest
grade-point average among Princeton regulars with a 3.6 in electrical
engineering.
- Back to the kicks - Matt Evans ranks second in Division
I-AA in average yards per punt (45.6).
- More kicks - Matt Evans is averaging 47.2 yards per punt in league
games.
- Still more kicks - Taylor Northrup has kicked off 11 times and had six
reach the end zone, including three for touchbacks.
- Last kick - Alex Sierk has missed one field goal inside 40 yards since
opening day, and that kick was blocked.
- By Djordje - Djordje Citovic has averaged 26.0 yards per catch on his
six
receptions.

17
straight games.
- Conference call - Princeton has not allowed a rushing touchdown in
four
Ivy League games. Princeton has allowed five passing touchdowns in four
Ivy League games.
- Conference call II - A win over Penn would give Princeton four Ivy
League
wins, matching the Tigers total of the last two years combined (not
including the forfeit).
- Young gun - Freshman Andrew Babinecz had five tackles and one sack
against
Columbia to earn Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors for the second time
this year.
- Young gun II - Brian Beem has started three straight games at
cornerback.
He is the second Princeton freshman to start at cornerback, along with
Damani Leech, Princeton's only three-time unanimous first-team All-Ivy
pick.
- Depth chart - Princeton has used a rotation of six different defensive
tackles this year.
- The dirty dozen - Princeton has 12 different players with at least one
sack.
- The baker's dozen - Princeton has 13 different players with at least
one
reception.
- Possessive case - Princeton has an average edge in time of possession
of
8:38 in its four Ivy League games.
- Back in the day - After playing 31 times in 28 years between 1876 and
1894, Princeton and Penn did not play for 41 years after that due to
ill-feeling between the schools.
- Rushin' roulette -Princeton has not had a 100-yard rusher since
opening
day (Kyle Brandt), but the Tigers have had a running back gain at least 70
yards seven times since.
- Quarterly report - Princeton has outscored its opponents 50-43 in the first and third quarters and 98-38 in the second and fourth quarter.
