PHILADELPHIA, P.A.
- For the women's basketball team, it is one down and 13 to go, as the Tigers picked up a win in the Ivy opener at Pennsylvania. In the first game of 1999, Princeton put on a show more exciting than the Fiesta Bowl. The Ivy League preseason favorite outscored the Quakers 12-3 in overtime to come away with the 67-58 win.
The crowd of 227 at the Palestra saw a very tight first half with two ties and seven lead changes in the opening period. The Tigers used the back-door play to perfection as Lea Ann Drohan (Sr., Ballston Lakes, N.Y.) found Kate Thirolf (Jr., Rockville, Md.) twice and Maggie Langlas (Jr., Missoula, Mont.) once on three consecutive possessions to give Princeton an 11-10 lead six and a half minutes into the game.
The Tigers led by as many as four in the first half, but turnovers in the final minutes allowed the Quakers to take a 29-25 lead into the break.
The second half saw much of the same with neither team leading by more than four points. Langlas connected on a three-point play to give Princeton a 43-42 lead with eight minutes remaining. With the score knotted at 49, Penn put together a four-point run to take a 53-49 advantage with 1:59 to play.
Two driving lay-ups by Langlas in the final 48 seconds brought Princeton back to a 55-55 tie with 3.8 seconds on the clock. Penn was unable to score in the final seconds, sending the game into the five-minute overtime period.
It was all Princeton in overtime. Langlas started the extra period with a steal followed by a long distance shot by Hillary Reser (Fr., Beaverton, Ore.) to set the pace for the Tigers. Princeton went 9-for-10 from the charity stripe in overtime, including a perfect 4-for-4 showing by Langlas. The Quakers did not have a field goal in the period, scoring all three points from the line.
Langlas led all scores with 23 points and eight rebounds in 45 minutes of play. Thirolf recorded her first double-double of the year, chipping in 14 points and pulling down a career-high 18 rebounds. Seniors Drohan and Julie Angell (Plymouth, Mich.) went 4-0 in the Palestra for their careers.
The Tigers are now 6-7, 1-0 Ivy, and will end a 12-game road trip this weekend as they travel to Brown on Friday, Jan. 8th, followed by Yale on Saturday, Jan. 9th.

Today's Note of the Day
- Ivy time, baby - After a 10-4 mark and a second place finish in the Ivy League last season, the Tigers, this year's preseason favorite, open league play tonight on the road. Princeton's last Ivy title came in the 1984-85 season, when it was co-champions with both Brown and Dartmouth. The Tigers won the title in 1978, when a post-season tournament was used to determine a single champion. Princeton is 3-0 at the Palestra under Feeley.
- SWAT team - Princeton center Lea Ann Drohan leads the team with 14
blocks
this season. Combined with classmate Julie Angell, they have 22
rejections on the year, four more than the Tigers' opponents combined (18)
and two more than the Quakers have tallied this season (20).
- Putting it together - Kate Thirolf has scored in double-figures on
seven
occassions this season. She has tallied double-digits in rebounds in
three games. Thirolf has yet to record a double-double this season.
- On the rise - After beginning the season 2-7, the Tigers have won
their
last three games, all on the road. In those games Princeton is averaging
58.3 points per game while giving up just over 51 points each time out.
- Earth Angell - Julie Angell scored 49 points in her first 207 minutes
this
season (6.21 points per game). In the Tigers' last four games, Angell
tallied 60 points in 139 minutes (15.0 points per 34.8 minutes of play),
including the game-winner in the opening round game against La Salle in
the First Union Classic.
- Gotta have the board - In its seven losses this season, Princeton was outrebounded by nearly 11 rebounds per game. The Tigers hold a 27 board advantage in the five victories. Princeton is 4-1 when it outrebounds its opponent. The Tigers are 1-6 when the opposition has the advantage on the boards.
- Bombs Away - Junior Kate Thirolf tallied 10 three-point baskets in the
Tigers first nine games this season. In her last three games, Thirolf has
nailed six long distance shots, including a 4-8 showing against La Salle.
- Bombs Away II - Maggie Langlas leads the Tigers in three-pointers made
with
26 and has 96 treys for her career, giving her fourth place all-time in
career three-pointers made. Her five three-pointers in the win over
LaSalle surpassed Andrea Razi '96 who graduated with 87 total long
distance shots. Langlas is one trey away from tying current teammate Kate
Thirolf who stands with 97 in her career.
- I'm honored - Along with leading the Tigers to the championship of the
First Union Classic, Maggie Langlas was named Most Valuable Player of the
tournament. In two games, Langlas scored 36 points and pulled down 14
rebounds. Julie Angell earned all-tournament honors, tallying 29 points
and seven steals in two games, including five swipes in the championship
game.
- Stop thief! - Maggie Langlas had 22 steals in 12 non-Ivy games last year. She has 31 swipes this year in 12 games out of league competition.
