PRINCETON, N.J. - On her 22nd birthday, senior Brooke Lockwood (Palatine, Ill.) seemed to be the gift giver, leading the Tigers with 19 points and 12 rebounds—her first career double-double—as Princeton snapped a eight-game losing streak with a 77-73 victory over cross-town rival Rider in women's basketball action at Jadwin Gym. The 19 points by Lockwood tied her career-high set earlier this year against New Hampshire, while the 12 rebounds were a career best. The Illinois native, who is averaging slightly more than seven points per game, has tallied 29 points in the last two games. "I had a lot of fun tonight," Lockwood said. "We saw on the vidoes that the post players were going to sag off. They gave the ball to me and it was there." The Tigers trailed 10-8 before a 13-6 run gave Princeton a seven-point advantage at the 12:36 mark. The Broncs cut the lead to two at 21-19, but a 13-3 Orange and Black run extended its lead to 12 with just under seven minutes to play. Five points in 37 seconds by Lockwood gave Princeton its biggest lead of the half at 39-25 with 4:03 on the clock. Lockwood finished off the opening stanza in style, connecting on a short jumper as time expired to give her 17 points for the half. Princeton led 45-35 at intermission. The Tigers shot 57% from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play and held a 26-15 advantage on the boards. The Broncs adjusted to the tremendous presence Lockwood had in the paint, applying more defensive pressure in the second half. Senior Maggie Langlas (Missoula, Mont.) stepped up to the plate and scored nine of her 18 points in the second half, including a three-pointer to stop a Rider run midway through the second half. Rider coach Eldon Price rallied the troops and refused to let his Broncs go down without a fight. After Tiger senior Kate Thirolf (Rockville, Md.) fouled out with six minutes to play, Rider put together a 10-3 run to cut the Princeton lead to three at 75-72 with 1:17 remaining. Three free throws were all that dented the scoreboard in the final minute of play. Jessica Munson (Jr., Norristown, Pa.) hit one of two at the line with 2.3 seconds on the clock for the four-point victory. The Tigers outrebounded the Broncs 49-40, and Allison Cahill (Fr., Uxbridge, Mass.) tallied a career-best nine rebounds. With the win, the Tigers improve to 3-12 on the season, 0-1 in league play, while Rider drops to 9-7. Princeton will return to action this weekend for a two-game Ivy series as Cornell and Columbia come to Jadwin. The Tigers host the Big Red on Friday, Jan. 28, followed by a match-up with the Lions on Saturday, Jan. 29. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
