PRINCETON, N.J - The crowd of 414 at Jadwin Gym witnessed something that had not happened in quite some time--a Columbia women's basketball victory. The Lions held on for a 63-57 win over the Tigers, their first at Princeton since 1986. The Tigers go 0-3 to open league play for the first time since the 1989-90 season--the last year they lost to Columbia.
In a back and forth first half, the Tigers held an early five-point lead at 7-2, but after three ties and five lead changes the Lions led 31-29 with under four minutes remaining in the opening period. A jumper by Brooke Lockwood (Sr., Palatine, Ill.) and a free throw by Kate Thirolf (Sr., Rockville, Md.) were all the Tigers could muster in the final three minutes and trailed 34-32 at halftime. Maggie Langlas (Sr., Missoula, Mont.) had an all-around productive half with 13 points, four rebounds, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot in 20 minutes of action. Lockwood had four assists at intermission.
The Tigers opened the second half with an 8-0 run, while the Lions were cold as ice, missing their first 10 field goal attempts. Columbia 's first field goal of the second half came at the 12:53 mark, where Princeton had taken a 39-34 lead--its biggest of the game. The two teams traded baskets over the next five minutes, and the Lions took their first lead of the second half at 7:17 when they led 46-45 on a layup by Shante Edmonds. Columbia would never trail again. The Light Blue had their biggest lead of the game at 58-51 with 3:04 on the clock. The Tigers were able to trim the deficit to two points with 1:12 left in the game when Lauren Rigney (So., Marlborough, Mass.) scored on an offensive rebound, but a layup by Shawnee Pickney and a pair of free throws by Patricia Kern put the game out of reach for the Tigers.
Langlas led all scorers with 22 points on 8 of 15 shooting from the field, including a 3 for 7 performance from behind the arc. Thirolf pulled down a team-high nine rebounds to go with nine points, while Rigney added nine points and seven rebounds.
For Cornell, Edmonds had her first double-double of her collegiate career with 19 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Junior Shawnee Pickney picked up her sixth double-double of the year with 11 points, 15 rebounds, and freshman Patricia Kern had 10 points. The Lions outrebounded the Tigers 46-34 but Princeton shot 39% from the floor, compared to 37% by Columbia.
With the loss, the Tigers drop to 3-14 on the season, 0-3 in league play, while Columbia improves to 3-13, 2-1 in the Ivy League. Princeton will return to action on Friday, Feb. 4, as it hosts Brown at 7 p.m.
