Men's Tennis Crowned ECAC Champion

BOSTON, Mass. - The Princeton men's tennis team entered the four-day ECAC Division I Men's Tennis Championship as the #3 seed on Friday, Oct. 6, and left as the newly crowned champion on Monday afternoon. The Tigers scored a 6-1 victory over Virginia Tech who was seeded fifth at the beginning of play.
Princeton picked up their first point by winning two of the three doubles matches. John Portlock (Wilton, Conn.) and Trevor Smith (Hilton Head, S.C.) combined to beat Davor Dupljnk and Jay Bruner 8-5 in number one doubles and Kyle Kliegerman (New York, N.Y.) and Judson Williams (Raleigh, N.C.) defeated Francis Huot and Andrew Vu in number two doubles 8-4. Virginia Tech took the third doubles match 8-3 as the team of Hendrik Chasse (Singapore) and Daniel Friedman (Gainesville, Fla.) fell to Gerard Baynham and Andras Laulund.
The Tigers also prevailed in five of the six singles matches. Kliegerman took the number one singles match against Dupljnk. Williams beat Huot at second singles, Smith won over Michael Kurz at third singles and Portlock beat Bruner in fourth singles. Virginia Tech's lone singles win came in the number five spot as Laulund defeated Friedman. Princeton's Tim Kofol (Bronxville, N.Y.) won the final match for the Tigers, defeating Gerard Baynham. Princeton made it to the finals by defeating three-time defending champion and host Harvard University 5-2. With the win over Virginia Tech in the finals, the Tigers claim an automatic berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle, Washington. The tournament is scheduled for February 15-18, 2001.
