HANOVER, N.H - Despite a career-high 18 points by freshman Allison Cahill (Uxbridge, Mass.), the women's basketball team fell to Dartmouth 74-57 in snowy Hanover. It was the fourth consecutive loss to the Big Green and the third straight for Princeton.
With the Tigers leading 5-4 just four minutes into the opening stanza, Dartmouth went on an 11-0 run, sparked by four points from freshman Katharine Hanks, to build a 15-5 advantage with 12:35 to play in the half. The Big Green held a 21-8 lead before back-to-back three-pointers by Maureen Lane (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) and Hillary Reser (So., Beaverton, Ore.) drew the Tigers within seven at 21-14 at the 8:06 mark. Dartmouth took its biggest lead of the first half at 35-21 on a pair of free throws by Jackie Lippe with 3:17 on the clock. Two shots from three-point land from Cahill in the final 2:42 cut the deficit to 10 points, and the Tigers trailed 37-27 at the half.
Cahill led the Tigers with 12 points at the break. Brooke Lockwood (Sr., Palatine, Ill.) had six rebounds, and Lauren Rigney (So., Marlborough, Mass.) had four assists in the first 20 minutes of play.
Dartmouth's Sherryta Freeman scored 12 points in the first 10:37 of the second half, including eight in a row, and the Big Green built a 21-point lead in a Freeman layup with 8:35 to play. When it seemed Freeman had cooled off, Lippe got hot, scoring 11 points in four and a half minutes to give the Big Green a 70-46 lead--its biggest of the game--with 4:25 remaining.
Lockwood scored all seven of her points in the final 3:50, and Princeton outscored Dartmouth 11-4 in the final four minutes. Hillary Reser hit a short jumper as time expired for the 74-57 final score.
Cahill led all scorers with 18 points--a career best--on 6 of 7 shooting from three-point range. She also added two rebounds and an assist. Lockwood led the team with seven rebounds. Kate Thirolf (Sr., Rockville, Md.), who played only five minutes in the first half after picking up two quick personal fouls, scored 12 of her 15 points in the second half to join Cahill as the only Tigers to score in double figures. Rigney handed out a career-high seven assists and led the team with four steals.
The Tigers shot 36% from the floor and 46% from long range, hitting 11 of 24 attempts. Dartmouth was perfect from the charity stripe, connecting on all 13 attempts, while the Tigers made 6 of 7.
With the loss the Tigers drop to 4-16 on the year, 1-5 in Ivy League play.
