CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - A valiant effort by the women's basketball team fell just short, as the Tigers lost to Harvard 73-67 in Lavietes Pavilion in Cambridge. Princeton has now lost three straight Ivy games.
The crowd of 1,012 saw a back and forth game in the opening minutes, but Harvard outscored the Tigers 18-8 in a five-minute span to lead 38-26 with 4:33 to play in the half. The Tigers scored four points in the final three minutes and trailed 43-34 at the break.
In the second half, the Crimson led 57-46 at the 9:11 mark--its biggest lead of the second half--, but an 8-0 Princeton run cut the lead to 57-54 with 6:06 to play. The Tigers cut the lead to two points at 59-57 on a three-point play by Brooke Lockwood (Sr., Palatine, Ill.). Harvard's Laela Sturdy, who led the Crimson with 19 points, answered with back-to-back field goals for a 64-57 Harvard lead with 4:18 to play. Princeton remained close, but the Crimson seemed to hit key baskets to stop each Tiger run. A layup by Lauren Rigney (So., Marlborough, Mass.) drew the Tigers within four at 66-62, but that would be as close as they would, as Harvard hit four of seven from the line down the stretch for the 73-67 final score.
Maggie Langlas (Sr., Missoula, Mont.) led the Tigers with 16 points and six rebounds. Kate Thirolf (Sr., Rockville, Md.) added 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and a team-high four steals. Hillary Reser (So., Beaverton, Ore.) came off the bench to score 12 points and pull down six rebounds. Rigney was the fourth Tiger to score in double figures, tallying 10 points, three steals and handing out a team-high four assists.
With the loss the Tigers drop to 4-17 on the year, 1-6 in Ivy League play. Harvard improves to 13-6, 6-1 Ivy League. Princeton will be back in action next Friday at Columbia at 7 p.m.
