Box Score
NEW YORK, N.Y. - All 13 Tigers saw action, and 11 players registered at least one point as the women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing skid with a 62-44 victory over Columbia in New York City. With the win the Tigers improve to 5-17 on the year, 2-6 in Ivy League play.
Maggie Langlas (Sr., Missoula, Mont.) led the Tigers with 16 points--14 coming in the second half. Kate Thirolf (Sr., Rockville, Md.) joined Langlas in double figures with 11 points. Hillary Reser (So., Beaverton, Ore.) added 10 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Lee Culp (Fr., High Point, N.C.)--in her first collegiate start--had six points and a career-best seven rebounds. Princeton came through with a tremendous defensive performance, holding the Lions to 24.1% shooting from the floor (13 of 54) and an anemic 10% from behind the arc (2 of 21). On the flip side, the Tigers shot 42% from the floor (19 of 45) and hit 18 of 23 attempts from the free-throw line. Princeton held a 44-36 advantage on the boards. The Tigers practically shut down Columbia's leading scorer and rebounder, Shawnee Pickney, limiting her to zero points and five rebounds.
Both teams came out a little slow in the opening minutes, and a Thirolf layup knotted the score at 11-11 with 8:42 remaining in the first half. Over the next seven minutes the Tigers outscored Columbia 16-8, and four free throws by Allison Cahill (Fr., Uxbridge, Mass.) in the final 1:30 gave Princeton a 27-20 lead at halftime.
The Tigers built a 10-point lead in the early minutes of the second half, and their lead would never dwindle to single digits. At the 10:36 mark, Langlas hit her first of three consecutive three-pointers to give Princeton a 47-24 lead with 9:08 to play. The Tigers held their biggest lead at 52-27 on a layup by Shani Moore (So., Pasadena, Md.) with 6:17 remaining. The Orange and Black hit 10 of 14 free throws in the final five minutes for the 62-44 final score.
Princeton will continue Ivy League play tomorrow night at Cornell at 7 p.m.
